Buying a HVX200 - What's the skinny?

there is no magic to it:

- hvx200a has replaced the 200. the "a" is better in low light
- hpx170 is coming out in september. its going to be the identical overall camera as the 200a but has a handful of extra features (that you may or may not care about) and does away with the dv tape drive and thus is much smaller and lighter

buy from reputable dealers you read about on the forum. abel cine, spec comm, full compass, bh, etc...

not much more to know.

Buyer beware with eBay.

We put together an FAQ on Gray Market joints. I'm not saying that the folks at the link are Gray Market, but just be careful.

Id never be completely comfortable with the 170. I make DV backups in the rare case that my HDD's crash.

what good is a DV tape back up if youre working with HD footage. at some point i think you have to just trust your tools.

The "good" is, I at least have a 16:9, 24 frame version of the film I am making in the worst possible scenario ie: HDD crash. I want at least that is all else fails

exactly as justyn says just burn your qt movies to data dvd..then your golden

and abelcine is THE place to buy the HVX, great price, excellent service and super fast inexpensive shipping...i've bought 2 from them..they rock!

thats like throwing a hamburger patty on the grill next to the steak just in case you burn the steak.

I don't understand why you are giving the guy a hard time for taking a responsible approach to backing up his footage?

If you don't want to back up your HD material to tape then don't, but don't ***** about other people doing it. Jeeze.

yeah but he's backing up his HD material to standard def -- seems like they are implying their might be better options (which there are).

im sure there are exceptions. but if my client is expecting an HD end product, an SD version isnt a realistic back-up plan. and in my world would just end up being work for the sake of work...

id think that just copying your captured content to another [reputable] hard drive is reasonable back up process. and one thats worked flawlessly for me for the past near decade. is it more expensive than a DV tape? yes. but i'd imagine the time saved and real-world usability would more than pay for itself...

not trying to give the guy a hard time. just trying to bring other, more effective options to light.

Andrew:

Are you taking orders on the 170 yet? If not, when will you begin your list?

Thanks,

Dan

I bought 2 USA HVX200's from this place in the past year with no issues whatsoever and paid under $4K for them. Some folks are OK with shelling out a grand more to buy the same camera from an "authorized dealer" but I'd rather not.

.

That's your call.

But I can't follow the $1000 savings you claim.

Bundled 16 GB card = $900.

Batteries (SC) = $100.00

Free Shipping (SC) = $50.00

Barry's Book = $90.00

US Warranty = Priceless.

Total: $1140.00
