Maxtor, WD, or Lacie for my next hard drive?

my WD 1Tb has never given me a single problem.

as a tip, id recommend buying from newegg.com to get a really good deal

I'd take a look at the WD Studio Edition (its got fw 400/800/usb/esata), over all the wd's are good drives.

Ive got one of them, a LaCie Rugged and a Maxtor 500gb fw800. Overall they are all very solid drives, the Western Digital is the quickest to boot, but I'd recommend all them. I know you are not looking at the same drives, but as brands go, unless the quality has gone way down in the last year.

great thank you. I mean most drives are pretty dependable, it's how you treat them, and mine sit on a desk and are rarely moved, and I'm not dumping and transferring like crazy so I think any of them is a solid choice.

My LaCie external SATA drive is making noises when I work the clips in Final Cut Pro. I would not buy another LaCie as I have also read accounts of these drives failing after a while. I'm super happy with each of the 500 GB Pro Edition WD My Book drives I have and just recently got a 1TB Pro Edition II RAID for like $250. from buy.com.

I had nothing but problems with Maxtors. My first computer in 98 had one and died after 2 months. I replaced it with a WD and still have it today. Never had one of those fail although I'm sure it can happen to any drive. I never bought anything else since and fixed many, many people's computers with bad drives and they were always replaced with Wd's with no followup complaints. Last year my wife picked me up a Seagate because it was on sale. It always behaved strangely from the get go and promptly died.

I've had maybe 1% of WD's die in the last two years and 40% of the maxtors... I hate hard drives

I would stay away from Maxtors. On a new build, one died on me in a day , it's replacement lasted 2 months and was replaced with a Seagate (they now own maxtor). Crossing my fingers on that one.
Oddly enough, I have a couple of older (5+ years) Maxtor 60GB drives used as backups, that are still doing fine. I'm sure that all drive manufacturers go through cycles of clunkers, but Maxtor has been going downhill since their 160GB Diamond max fiasco a few years back (similar t the IBM "Deathstar" one).
Sure hope this helps.

I have quite a few Lacie drives and Have never had a problem. I have a Maxtor as well and it is still going, although I do not use it for anything critical. Lacie is my choice.

The only HD I've had problems with is the LaCie 500 GB. I HATE LaCie. Go on Amazon.com and check out the reviews of it...

I keep it bookmarked just in case I'm idiot enough to consider getting another...:badputer:

My WD Studio Edition 500 has worked beautifully with FW 800 - the first drive
out of four fast enough to let me edit comfortably with FCP in my Macbook Pro.

for some reason all the mac x perts in nyc always advice against lacie. I personally have over 2.5TB of lacie storage 2TB WD mybooks and a coupla g-drives.
All was fine till a year ago when one of my lacies crashed with no warning.

I personally am a huge fan of the g-drive,especially the G-Raid mini:

p.s.- i also have a maxtor one touch but i really dont dare use it as professional "edit" drive, just for backup storage.

With hard drives, things change (quite a bit) over the years. There was a time when Maxtors were among the best drives you could buy, but not these days. I try to stay away from WD nowadays too. Right now, it seems Seagate (and maybe Hitachi) offers the most reliability (and by far, the best warranty).

doug, now that you're using the hvx and you're tapeless i'd suggest getting a raid 1 for redundancy. you no longer have tape backups. so everything is stored on your drive. what happens if that drive fails?
