Hey dudes!

So my friend and I finally got to shoot our little mini-project, where he writes and direct and I do photography and editing, after being bored for so long.
So while I'm waiting for my director to come home from Copenhagen so he can watch the takes with me I got the itch in my fingers and decided to try out
some different color corrections while I wait. Some are more extreme than others, but would like to hear what you think.
Again shot with my dvx/sgpro and my pentax lenses, and I also used a cool light 4x55w fluorscent box.

Cheers!

looking very nice man. Would be particularly interested in seeing some uncorrected grabs of the interiors with the white walls. If you would be so kind :D It really depends on the style of the short, but i love th esecond grabs color/range.

also some footy!

Hello!
I don't think I wanna go for the look in the second grab, I think it looks cool but a little to extreme for this project. I'm probably gonna go for a more white and neutral look which would reflect the boring life of the character better.
I will post some uncorrected interior shots after I get some sleep :)

I used my trusty old 55mm Porst f 1.2, 28mm Asahi f 2.8 and my Soligor zoom 75-150mm(just the shot where the girl is sitting on the bed).

Glad you guys like it! Hope my director will be happy as well :)

-cheers!

I love the natural lighting look, cant wait to see the finished product

The girl looks similar to the one in the foley blooper reel

great grabs smettli. always a pleasure to see new stuff from you. how is that 28mm asahi for you. thinking about purchasing a wider one. i have a 50mm. also, how do you like the flourescent ligthing. im going to purchase a flo light kit. for me i think it gives a more natruel and film like look.what about you? do you feel the same?

Sjanan: It is indeed the same girl from the Foley project, though this time we managed to wrap the shoot :)

Deckard: The 28mm Asahi is "OK", I wouldn't go any wider though cause it would vignette too much(I can't zoom in more on the sgpro GG because of first version dvx). However, next on my to get list is a nice 35mm f.2. lens.
I totally love the cool lights! As I usually plan my lighting after natural source light, the cool lights are like having window-boosters. And in the shots were I got enough light from the actual windows I used the cool lights far away to give some extra fill which would originate from another room. The cool lights makes me feel really lazy though, at one point I just got my director(who has no technical experience what so ever) to just move the box around from one place to another while we were shooting. The whole issue with light stops when it comes to adapters...I couldnt give more a sh*** anymore, now I love draging my cool lights around and I'm definately getting more. A couple fluorscent boxes more and those 575w HMI especially looks very nice as well :)
So yeah, the fluorscents definately do a nice job pretending to be windows!

I used the pentax-k mount for the sgpro, but apparently Wayne is out of stock on them now for a while. Hope I don't brake mine :)

Thanks guys!

Hey smettli!
Good to see you again :)

been a while!

I really like the grabs you have here. You got that real natural color to it, which is great!
And the sharpness i great as always.
I like that you use mostly natural lighting.. or is everything here natural lighting?

Anyways, can't wait to see the rolling movie:P

cheers!

is this the same project as jaykay?

did you stick to a certain f stop for the whole shoot? if you remember, what aperture did you shoot the outside stuff at? it looks shallow without being too shallow :) very nice

i've always wanted a kino but could never justify the cost... i can get a 3xredhead kit for the same price here. how do you find working with just one light? is it enough wattage to light a decent interior night scene? would you take it over a redhead kit?:D

cool.thanks

Hey Tommetass!

The natural light is supported by my single 4x55w cool light to "boost" the light coming from the windows. It feels good working on something narrative again :)

Jenning: Yes, this is the same project I did the "Jaykay" testshots for.
When using my 55mm I mostly shot at aperture 2.8(interior) and 4(mostly exterior). My 150mm teleshot was shot at 3.5, and same when using my 28mm.
I've been using a 3x 800w redhead kit for "work" lately, and it has been very kind to me. But I've also been using a lot of blue gel on them to get a cooler look.
Last time we used my fluorscent box for key light and used red heads with blue gels to paint background and fill which also works pretty well. The fluorscent box alone is not enough for night shots, and that's why I'm getting a couple of hardlight HMI's(preferably 575w and 150w) to make it possible. Though I was supriced over how much light the 4x55w fluorscent puts out, but it makes sense though as it puts out equalient light as a 900w tungsten.

Thanks again for the support guys, I'm really excited to see how this film will turn out, careful editing is key in this one :)

- Cheers!

Nice images, very sharp and I see no grain at all.

Now can I ask how you shoot your stuff and edite on?
Your mentaning the quality so good all the time so I want to know if that's okay?

like do you shoot in 25p or 25pa? (at a 1/50 shutter?)
what is your export setting or the compression you use?
how do you mentain the qulity so good?
thanks

so smettli, your saying the flo lights arent enough to light interior night scenes. are the hmi's good to give that soft cool light even at night inside?

Hello,

I shoot in 25p (don't have advance mode) with 1/50 shutter and I edit in premiere, and note that the reason it looks so clean is because of the low-resolution on the grabs, they look grainier at full rez(posted under).
I just exported the grabs straight from premiere and converted them into jpg's.
When the film is done, I export as microsoft dv-avi from premiere and use quicktime player to convert into a h.264 file for internet download.

Deckard: I really have no experience with flo lights, this is the first flo I have ever tried. But for night scenes I would basicly trhow some hard "moonlight" from windows to give it a more dramatic look, which I believe the Hmi's could help with.
The Hmi's are hardlights so it won't be soft, but still "cool"(5600k) temperature.

However, I don't know when I will be allowed to post footage as my director wants to wait until he has sent it to some festivals, you know because of those son of a bi*** festival rules about not being allowed to show your films on the web before they have screened them :)
