Hi,
Im a 15 year old student and I recently made a video to premiere infront of my school and i would like you guyts to help me with the editing. All the filming is final i just think the edit is too simple and rather boring. i use premiere cs3 and it was filmed with a gs panny camera. The topic was "Thankyou".

thank you for watching and please be as mean as you can and help me make the edit better

Alrighty, Just sat down an watched it.

First, kill the 20 seconds of black in the beginning, too much of a lead time. The flash frame at 1:46 didn't make much sense to me. There was a zoom in at :29 and earlier that looked kinda strange. Couldn't figure out why that was there. I think you had a music dropout at:37 it repeated apart of the song.

I see what you were doing with the gum, but it looked like she was giving her drugs. Haha, not the look you were going for I'm sure. Mayeb playing with that edit. Or finding another shot.

I liked the idea of the "Pay it forward" concept.

Oooh, the first thankyou, I wouldn't kill the music. It doesn't follow with the rest of the edits on the other thanks you's. Basically I think you should keep the music going throughout.

Sorry if I am ADD here, watching and talking at the same time. 3:35, he walks up to the machine twice. He was already there on a prior edit. Haha, nice Coke placement. Though that is the worst thing for you after exercise. Not regarding the edit. But just in general. Haha.

It feels a little long. Myabe you can switch the song for the second one and edit to that. Since the second song feels more applicable. Might need to just experiment.

Best of luck though, hope I said something constructive.

wow thanks alot. but i cannot do anything about the song since it was a group decision before i ever heard it and teacher wanted it. i hated editing to it and i just kinda had to make the clips a little "on beat" so the gum part got messed up.

thanks alot though

Why'd the teacher want that song? Ugh. I'm all for nickleback, but their music is over-used in student/amateur films, just as evanescence and linkin part are over-used. Plus I felt the song didn't completely work. It gives and over-all sorrowful feeling to the piece, but the content seemed to be more about hope and kindness. Sure the lyrics worked, but never use the lyrics to establish a mood, it's always the tune itself. Anyways, oh well.

The concept, seen it before, but it was a good idea nonetheless. Not going to comment on the film itself. It was okay, and I suppose that you're a high school student, so it's fine for what it is.

As for the editing, hmm. First, not really sure why there's a lot of fisheye shots used. They seem a bit over-used, like it was used because it was 'cool', but for no other reason. I'm fine with skater videos having lots of fisheye, but this didn't have anything crazy, stunt like, or action for the fish eye to be used. Maybe you could cut some out?

The random post-production zooms and crazy stuff don't seem to have any purpose to them... other than look cool... again. Leave that stuff out. There's no purpose for crazy flash cut editing, or random zooms. There needs to be a reason for every decision, every cut, every shot, unless this is just some eye candy music video or skater video, which it isn't.

The best advice that I can give to help keep this interesting is to tighten it up. In old films we used to see people walk into a building, then through the hallway, then up the elevator, then to the office where he meets someone. Nowadays we see someone enter a building, then the doors open and that person meets someone. You cut out all the walking and unnecessary dragging moments and shots, people will still follow. This whole film could have been easily cut down in half just by eliminating a lot of things.

I would suggest perhaps you linger a bit on the first one (although make it tighter than it already is), but then as the film progresses, you speed it up a bit, make it tighter and tighter, until you lead up to a montage where you show the final few, and you see the chain reaction happening a lot faster. Then once it reaches the final moment the montage stops. I think the final scene, although it can also be tightened a bit, works pretty well.

thanks man. Is my editing too simple and boring? it honestly too easy and it makes me feel like the film is kinda like its my first time ever editing. also i just hate editing such kind and quiet scenes with such loud music. i picked the Thank You song at the end myself and i really liked the way it went with the clips.

but thanks alot man

Pretty good for what you're going for. Maybe color correct a little to bring out a little more color (if you know what you're doing. if not don't worry about). I agree with the previous posts about tightening it up a bit. A few awkward shots, and that quick zoom is really distracting. I say just cut that out. The entire thing could easily be shortened to about 3 minutes. If you're trying to get into filmmaking you've got a good start to a very long path. If not, you've got a decent product for your class.

Overall rating: Good.

Never think of editing that way. Boring vs not. When it's a boring editing, it usually has to do with the length, how long you drag things out, etc. Sometimes it works, but mostly it doesn't. The best form of editing is that which you don't notice, unless the whole intention is to notice it. I don't think the intention here is to notice it.

Don't make crazy cuts, don't make fake zooms, just focus on making it smooth (smooth cuts, seemless cuts, match cuts), tight, and it'll look that much more professional, not boring.

Sometimes it's just the content, and no matter how much editing you do, it won't fix the content.

i get it. see im kinda coming from making spy videos with my friend when i was in grade 5. we used a non-digi cam so when we screwed something up we had to rewind and over write it with the good part. after purchasing a digi cam in gr 7 i only shot skateboarding and really got into those skate videos and stuff and over the 4 years everyone had crazy titles and on beat edits and stuff so i kinda forgot about the good old stuff i used to do which came out great. *(atleast that is what my parents said)

Shorter is almost always better. If you can cut some bits out of the song and blend it together seamlessly, you could pull some of the running time down. But thanks for your attitude in taking criticism, it bodes well. And thanks to all those who have commented for keeping in context that this is one of Frogy's first videos and he's only 15. Even though he said "hit me with your worst" you're all keeping it constructive and helpful, and that's appreciated!

See the way i see it is that if i get all the negative feedback, i can change everything people dont like then it will be better. i notice some people posting videos and asking if you like them or not and whenever there is negative feedback, the person doesnt care because they like it and think its good. im trying to get as much negative feedback now for future references so i can improve my next film. so far i got shorter, no gay effects, better song selection (i didnt choose this song anyways) better shots, no cutting music and more.

thanks alot everyone....... again... for probly the 5th time
