How Is Panasonic Keeping Up With Sony

This might have been covered, but I didn't know what to search for.
I am just wondering how Panasonic is going to keep up with the new Sony cameras. I know they have the HPX500, and the new HVX and new HPX170, but doesn't the EX1 and the EX3 that is supposed to come out outdo the HVX and HPX170 in terms of abilities and price?

I'll take (and DID take), the HPX over any of the long GOP 1/2" Sony cameras.

To say that Panasonic is "behind" Sony's offerings is factually incorrect.

To be honest, I didn't realize the HPX was that affordable either... I guess I just assumed it was out of my league. Hmmm... interesting... very interesting.

Dealers are selling the HPX500 body at $9995 and then you get a $2,000 rebate from Panasonic, so your net cost (for the body/VF combo) is $8,000.

Beyond price..P2 is the elder format but still light years ahead of SxS.

Hitachi has even picked it up as the solid state work flow for its future cameras. P2 is no longer a new format it is an industry reality. With support rippling across 3rd party manufacturers exponentially.

Pany has my money and they will have it again when hpx 170 takes orders

Hi,

Yeah. Me, too. My HVX will become a 170.

DVCPro is a mature - read proven in the field - format.

It is what it is.

What do you guys think about the EX1's extremely sharp LCD and will hmc150 or the hpx170 improve from HVXs not the most ideal LCD?

The HVX200A is improved, and the HPX170 is vastly improved. The ability to judge focus on the LCD is sooooo much better that it's almost silly how much better it is. And then, on top of that, you have three separate focus assists.

I didn't get a chance to take a 170 outdoors and see how the panel holds up in direct daylight, but a $20 hood can take care of any issues there.

Will there be an hvx200b or do you think that once the 170 comes out it will pretty much be the go to cam over the hvx?

Having worked with both of 'em, yes the 170 is definitely the go-to unless you need DV tape. The HVX200A is darn tempting, I've already looked into upgrading, but no doubt whatsoever I'm going to move to the 170!

So the 170 is worth the wait. I was rocking the a1 but it was too much for what I needed. So now ive got the 100b. I wont need hd for a while so the 170 is very tempting.

In an interview, Jan Crittenden more than implied that the 170 was an advance over the 200a. Besides, Panasonic is betting on P2 as the future.

The EX1's LCD is enticing. The small letters on the display look great too. I wish more cameras had less clunky display and menu systems. Other than that, it's a pretty darn good looking image too.
Anyway, since money is an issue for me, the obvious choice is definitely HMC 150 or the SCARLET(skipping the argument about accessories) in terms of tapeless shooting and reasonable pricing of the camera and the SD/CF cards.

There is absolutely no doubt I'll be moving on to the 170 aswell,

I just wish we could get confirmation if it is going to be NTSC/PAL switchable?

the thing that makes me nervious is in the states it's gonna be the HPX170, and other countries like eg. South Africa it's gonna be the HPX174. But that could just be distribution logistics, or maybe NTSC vs. PAL (I HOPE NOT!)
