Marketplace Improvement Suggestion Thread

Ok... Let's not turn this thread into endless debates about the validity or not of a particular suggestion posted and get derailed. Just post your suggestions and move on for the most part. :)

I'd just like to hear the ideas that the other 35,000 of you guys have that may or may not be good ways to improve the marketplace.

What would you like to see?

This ain't eBay... So don't be too extravagant. This is a community forum and the marketplace is here to benefit the community at large and should largely follow the same kinda vibe we've set up on the forum here. So, don't expect some secure transaction credit card identity verification system or any of that kind of stuff.

Just be realistic. I'm more looking for proactive solutions rather than heavy restrictions type of suggestions.

So, lay 'em out, and don't be offended if I delete some posts that get the thread too off-topic with debate over the validity of one particular suggestion. We can narrow later if there is some good stuff and then you guys can discuss the potential things that could be done in detail.

Later,
Jason

Jason,

I think http://my.is and a bunch of other boards have a pretty decent "review" system. Under each users avatar, there's iTrader. It allows users to leave each other feedback for transactions. Not sure if that's something you can add on to this board, but thought I'd throw it out there.

two thoughts-

rating system/feedback list in each profile.

or

Just a seperate subforum with usernames as topics and feedback left there. Might be hard to keep it all organized but a seller could easily provide a link to this feedback thread for potential buyers.

thanks for looking into this and taking our thoughts into account. This place really is a community.

there are a couple things that may help, its been suggested that everyone use there real name, however, rather than make everyone reregister, perhaps just reset each peorsons CP to display there real name and their real city.

also under location on under join date on the post, perhaps it would be better if it was mandatory this info shows up.

another idea, I know its easy to search how often and where someone has posted by using the cp, but perhaps list a users number of posts under date joined on the left of the posts?

also, something that may be possible, in the opening post of eeach theread, maybe under the users sig, a dvxuser warning/disclamer, dvxuser is not responcible, but we incurage you to research the seller, something along those lines.
just some thoughts,

Jason

I think that on transaction of 500 dollars and above, everytime someone wants to sell something, they would have to just get approval from a mod by providing a home phone number where a moderator can call and verify that it really is that person selling whatever, with vonage we all know that all calls are free to usa canada and europe, the reason why I say a number is needed is because I had a situation
where I almost got scammed oncraigslist with a macpro but the dude made the mistake on callingme one time from his cellphone
and that was it, just using his cellphone I tracked him down, got the cops involded, it got to the point where he almost got arrested not only because of the mailfraud but his cellphone provider wanned to press charges against him for doing fradulent activities on their network
later the guy was begging me to just stop, by this time he had already refunded me my money and then some, damn right, I am not gonna let some ponk take advantage, not with whats available as far as technology just my .02

I think that the forum should not get to involved with sales. Buyers should buy at their own risks, but I think that if you have less then 50 posts on the forum that people should just be more aware of the potential for fraud.

A purchase rating system for each user would be nice.

Also, if this would be possible for just the marketplace forum, having posts show the last 3 chunks of the poster's IP address is another way to not only offer some protection to buyers but to sellers as well because that way multiple people posting positive or negative comments in a short period of time would be easily identified. No sock puppets.

Another thing would be to require that people not only post pictures of the items, but also include a piece of paper with their username and the date in the photos. There's at least one forum online that does this and, at the very least, it guarantees that (a) the item actually exists (b) that at least some portion of the item is in the condition in which it was described and (c) that the seller didn't just grab an image from somewhere on the net.

Mmm.... okay... :embarasse

User feedback for past transactions works on numerous other forums I'm on.

There also dedicated Mods for the marketplace, which I would highly suggest as well. They are tasked with resolving disputes, both in transactions and feedback.

I don't really think there's anything wrong with the marketplace as it is... as long as you know who you're buying from.

I agree with HorseFilms. I do think that maybe we should allow ebay links from users who fit a certain criteria (post count or time on forum..), though this might be hard to implement, it would let purchasers know that they are protected (when using ebay with paypal).

I also think that mcgeedigital's idea of dedicated mods would be great.

I think it best for DVXUser to be as LITTLE involved in the transaction/sales/rating process as possible. Leave the marketplace as it is, and save the worries of liability, the efforts of verification, etc. I think there are plenty of warning stickies that people can and should read, which is likely the best that can be done. Unfortunately, it's much easier to scam someone than to prevent scamming, and the scammers will always be one step ahead.

That said, I think the most effective tool for me would be a list of all the people who have bought or sold things from/too each user (if they're willing). I think this "combination of reputations" would be most useful... perhaps an ebay-like feedback center with the buyer/seller's name and a rating. I wouldn't really trust it without knowing who's doing the rating!

I think a user rating system will help as well, but that should be the extent of it. Placing unnecessary restrictions such as post count limits will only serve to discourage honest new members. Ultimately it should just be a case of "buyer beware" and it's the responsibility of the buyer to do the research to protect themselves. It would also behooves the seller to post references if they are new or shown pictures of what they're selling with their names on it.

I would say it is impossible to have a system that is iron glad. I have had good experience here actually much better than ebay. That said it's because I read the moderators suggestions and before buying I researched the seller before making a offer. Maybe before you can buy or sell in this section you need to have read the moderators warnings and agree that you understand the risk. Just my thoughts. I hopes that the market place doesn't go away.

i think all sellers and buyers should have an email and phone number as part of the registration process and then all potential sales can be carried out via email and or phone. i cannot stand all the posts which say 'i pm'd you'. a buyer should be able to talk to a seller if he or she so desires. as well, a seller should be able to talk to any and all potential buyers. good communication will go miles in avoiding fraud as i would never spend more than $100 without talking to a seller. if a seller will not give you a phone number after an initial email then avoid the sale. honest people should be more than willing to help buyers--it is called salesmanship!!!

Hey Jason,
WE must have A Positive/neutral/negative rating. This should be represents permanent reputation. For each transaction, buyers and sellers can choose to rate each other by leaving Feedback

To be honest, I think most of these suggestions add a large level of complexity to the process.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of fraud or bad experiences in this marketplace. There are a few posts every now and then of "Don't buy from such and such" but those are very rare. The level of honesty on this forum is incredibly high for bring on the internet*

The only suggestion I've seen throughout the years that makes some sense and wouldn't be hard to impliment / moderate is that you can only post in the Marketplace if you have 100 posts (or some number).

I've sold and purchased quite a few things through this Marketplace. Some items for over $1,000 and have had no trouble. But if I see "Junior Member" you can bet I'm going to pass.

*This statistic has no mathmatical basis and is only the perception of DVXUser krestofre. :)

Positive and neutral ratings can be biased, I trader can be hacked.

Why not have a 3 month minimum membership for selling, and also have a minimum number of unique posts to be able to buy or sell...

Hmmm, the minimum number of posts/time SEEMS like a good idea, but I wonder how much it would really help.

Instead of the onus on the seller to qualify, why not have the market place inaccessible until you have read the stickies. My bet is that most of the scams happen with people there is already some info on, or who are new to the site, which is all covered there. At least if you require they read the fine print, you can Pontius Pilate in good conscience.

But I'm glad the concept of real names came up. I do not for the life of me understand why people don't use their real names on what is considered a professional forum. I hate replying to a post or I.M. with "Thanks Sk8erDood" Makes me feel like I'm back in high school (and not in the good way). Part of the purpose of this forum is developing relationships. That usually starts with a name.
