Mac OSX 10.5.3 update and Duel Adapter

So I was having issues with my Penryn MBP and 10.5.2 / Duel Adapter / P2CMS causing kernel panics.

I realize that it isn't always wise to update/upgrade your OS because it often proposes compatibility issues, but I decided to download the OSX 10.5.3 update hoping that the update would solve my kernel panic problems. Unfortunately now my MBP doesn't even mount my Duel Adapter /P2 cards and i'm even worse off than before. I ejected the DA and plugged it back in and this caused a kernel panic.

Be wary of updating to 10.5.3

Hey, Tom! LTNS.

Here's another reason why it makes a lot of sense to get an inexpensive (even used) Windows laptop with a PCMCIA slot for offload purposes. With MacDrive, you can offload to any Mac-format external HDD, or with nothing additional, you can offload to a FAT32 HDD. You can also format cards with no additional software.

Whether you prefer Mac or Windows, in this case, it simply makes sense.

Yessir! Hope you're well Dave! I hear you, but please explain why something so seemingly simple is not achievable by at least one company? Fine, Apple doesn't support i, but at least either Duel or Apple own up to the driver issue and FIX it!

Also have dealt with NTFS for Mac to transfer large files to a PC environment. nice utility.

Duel, I can't say. But I get the impression from Apple that they think "they're all going to use FCP anyway, so why bother?"

But until SOMEONE steps up to fix it, there are better solutions available.

Things are good -- will shoot you an e-mail sometime soon.

DuelAdapter was working swimmingly until i went to 10.5.3. Then it caused shutdowns.

i called Duel and they said they are "very concerned." They're supposed to get back to me later.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way to downgrade back to 10.5.2 is to erase the HD and do a clean install? anyone know where to get the 10.5.2 upgrade after I clean install (if they cant resolve this)

Yes, Gary, you have to erase and reinstall. I upgraded before seeing this post. I'll have to wait for a fix from Duel. I don't have the courage to redo my system all over again... :-(

on my laptop i'm really thinking about going back to 10.4, the whole having to restart after i remove my adapter has gotten old. and with more bugs with every update things are starting to get hairier.

got a call back from Duel.. they said apparently when you update the OS from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 it does something to the P2 drivers. So if you reinstall the P2 drivers, everything should work according to Duel.

anyone know if this is true? I wont have time to test it until later..

tried it. doesnt work.

Duel told me to call Panasonic.

I was fine with 10.5.3.....it was a faulty Duel adapter. Sent it back for warranty replacement and ran an onsite edit for two days off of my MacBookPro with NO HITCHES with Duel Adapter inserted all the time. Dumped cards on the fly with no problems .

I'd say you really have to protect the adapter in transit. I have a laptop shoulder strap pad that I wrap around the adapters wiring just to give extra protection when I'm traveling with it.

A used Powerbook G4 is another solution, probably preferable for Mac oriented types. The last, fastest one they made, 1.67 GHz, still makes an excellent P2 transfer workstation (as should many of the older, slower ones). It'll run FCP6 under 10.4.x just fine too. They're about $6-700 on eBay right now, loaded up with 2 GB of memory, a 100 GB drive, the higher rez display and a DL DVD. Mine's been great.

If you've used time machine to make a back-up prior to installing updates....

You should be able to step back to the system prior to the install ???

Cheers

I am running 10.5.4 with the Duel and not having any problems. I did not reinstall the P2 drivers as another poster was instructed to do. My original DA went bad and I got a warranty replacement - everything is fine.
I just think the DA is a fragile little gadget that needs to be pampered. Good luck getting things up and running.
One other thing to check. On the DA there is a slide toggle switch with A/B settings. If your running a Mac the switch should be in the "A" position.
