Hi!

I've been working on this timpelapse music video piece for a while now, going out grabbing footage whenever I can. The video was shot for £0, using my DVX 100 (original model) and a stills photography tripod. Im finally in a place where its basically done, bar a little re-framing here and there and some titling.

I wanted some thoughts on it before I finally lock the edit once and for all.

Here is the link to download the file (130mb):

I edited in PremierePro 2 and graded/animated/composited in After Effects 7

Any feedback/comments/opinions welcome!

Thanks!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

[so yes technically this is a music video, and I will post in the proper place once its all finished up.]

WOW DUDE! That was nice! What'd you use for the dynamic freezeframe stuff? Way too cool. Looked liek you had an adapter too...

This is by Far a work of Art.
nice job, nice color, good choice of music
I like it A lot.good job you work like a pro
it was worth downloading I would like to see more of your work!!
Take care.

Awesome! How long did that take you to edit and do the VFX?

If I could suggest anything, maybe think about what the story is, if there is one, and hone in on that more. Right now it's a collection of really cool abstract shots, with no clear story, (not that it should have one, because it plays great as-is) but maybe the story is that these guys are all observing the crazy world we live in and questioning it. Most people take it for granted when we should all be asking ourselves, "Why are we living this way?"

There's a line in the song pertaining to that, "useless waste of space.." I think. You have the city elements, cars, cranes, buildings; and you have the natural elements, leaves, rain, birds; maybe it's about paving over the natural to make way for the man-made? I don't know, just a thought.

Great work.

Wow - thanks very much for these kind words!

Really glad that you guys liked it - its great to hear some thoughts on it as I've been working on it (on and off) for so long now.

It wasn't shot with any lenses or adaptors, I tried to force DOF whenever possible while shooting all the 'real' footage. As for the 'time-freeze' shots, I set the 3d camera to have a very shallow DOF in after effects.

I edited as I went out shooting, but I wasnt able to do all the filming in one hit, so I actually started this whole thing back in January and would try to do at least a few evenings a week on the edit/effects. The big CG shots did take a long time to get right, especially the ones with people in!

Thanks for those thoughts on the story side of things. This was something I thought about for a long time. In a loose sense there was a narrative in place when I set out to shoot this. Basically, I wanted it to look like the band members were heading through this grinding city atmosphere to reach the rehearsal room. So originally they were all going to be carrying their instruments and I was going to shoot timelapse of them setting their instruments up etc. I changed my mind though and decided to keep the narrative a bit more open ended. You can still view it as each one of them making a journey, but I dont think thats immediately clear really!

Thanks so much again, I really appreciate you taking the time to download this and feedback.

Really, really good. I may have to attempt something similar now thanks to you. Love all the dof shots. The images look beautiful & crispt. Take it you did this on a PAL dvx?

I'm happy to be of some inspiration! Seriously, thats awesome.

Yeah it was on shot on a PAL version DVX100 - I see you're based in the UK too, guessing you have the same?

Thanks for checking it out!

Truly great work Ross.
I have had the privalige of watching this piece come together over the last few months and am absolutely blown away by the end result.
There was one shot (specifically the one where the camera travels up the side of the red brick wall) where I found myself wondering how he did it for a second. Before I realised that I knew. There's the sign of a good effect :)

love the grungy feel too, and great CC...

in short dude - it's a winner....

(now I gotta step up MY game - you git)

wauuu it looks so cool.
especially those time freeze scenes..
sorry for my noob question:
You used DVX on tripod for that shoots or you have used a dslr camera for stills??
can you point me to some tutorial for that kind of effect ( except videocopilot)
tnx

Hey thanks -

There arent any tutorials that I know of for the 'frozen time' type effect, I took inspiration from an Andrew Kramer tutorial called '3d photographs' and I just kept playing around and took the idea further really. I was trying to find some easy way of doing a bullet time(ish) look.

I didnt use a stills camera for the 'frozen elements'. For small things like petals and leaves I scanned a lot of them in, for the shots with people, I filmed the background/main body shot as a wide frame and then enlarged the shot by 400% or so to give room to fly the camera around it. I would also get a shot zoomed right in on the person to get the close up image of the face, which Id keep at 100% and then place over the enlarged shot, so without DOF on the after effects cam it would look like the person was wearing a mask of their own face! Then it was just a case of edge blurring and cloning to remove edge between to 2 layers.

Does that make any sense? Sorry its a tricky one to explain! Can give more detail if you need.

Thanks for taking the time to download and watch!

Ross
