This has been one of the most informative and popular threads on the site.
Let's not have it devolve into bickering and name calling, please.

Luis,

I'm sorry I used the word idiots on this forum. I just think this thread ended in a very disappointing way.

No it didnt. Plenty of people are still getting good info from this, so its still a good thread. Hell the mods should just delete all the bickering and stickylock this and just let Prodigi update it as he has more info, yaddamean?

Hopefully, Adam can glean some constructive criticism through the small amount of noise in the posts immediately following his posting of the rough trailer.

You can't ask a close-ended question like, "Does this make you want to watch my film?" and expect everyone to take that as an invitation to collaborate. I, for one, would love the opportunity to have a chance to interact with him on the project.

Contrary to what is being said of the forum in the most recent pile-on posts, I know this to (largely) be a community of thoughtful and collaborative cinephiles, craftspeople and artists - many of whom give regularly and generously of their time and intellect.

Once Adam has a chance to consider his associations here, I bet he'll find a way to continue the collaboration. Remember, at the end of the day, it is his vision. At the same time, film is one of the few arts that has the capacity for - and is often better because of - being a collaborative process.

Adam will pull it together. I saw a lot of promise in the clips and the genre has a large market, including me. I don't know the story but it seemed it could be something of a, El Mariachi meets the Godfather. That would be fun! If so, it has a demographic of 14-45 males. That's a decent chunk of of the box office pie and DVD sales could be handsome as well. :2vrolijk_08:

Adam, keep up your bulldog determination. Keep your eye on the ball and don't pay attention to the cat calls coming from the stand.

So Verna saved SS from that damn shark!

For those who were disappointed with what they saw in the rough, there's a quote that probably should apply here. I can't remember it exactly, but it goes something like this:

"Your film will never look as good as the dailies, and it will never look as bad as the first cut."

Adam probably has some great raw footage, and after it's been cut together in a final edit and color-graded and has a proper sound mix in it, he'll probably be just fine.

In general, you should NEVER show ANYONE rough footage. Ever. No good can come from it. To Adam's credit, he's been showing us everything: the good, the bad, and the ugly, in every aspect, from story to first cut. So he showed a rough cut, which I would normally advise anyone against doing, but because he's gone completely out of the mold here, he chose to do so because that's what this thread is all about. Unfortunately, that move appears to have backfired.

Good luck, Adam. I hope that you finish it up soon, and that the final product is worthy of the efforts you've put in, and that you sell it at a profit, and I must say that if you feel like sharing more, we definitely do look forward to hearing about the rest of the journey.

is it possible anyone can put up the direct link, cuz I still can't find it on youtube. Coming from a guy, whose about to pick up a check for a decent amount (not 300 + but a respectable amount for what im trying to do). I know that getting a film even actually budgeting for production with outside investors is extremely difficult. For example, Im hiring crew people from lighting to special effects to camera men. I would assume, (going off their resume) they have vastly more experience then I do, vastly why haven't they got a film budgeting. Why must they freelance and work on other projects r they more deserving. In my case and adam's (and alot of people in that matter) its who we know. In adam's case, he stated he'd been affiliated with previous disrto movies in some capacity. These investors r not out to see a good movie they wanna make money (believe me). That's why I tell people who you think we get budgeted first, a guy making the shoot em up zombie movie or someone making an award winning doc on butterflies. So I don't think experience has anything to do with talent, I don't think experience merits a budget, I don't think experience merits a creative vision. Cause, I know its always making the movie you wanna make or not getting budgeted for it, people need to realize that this is a business. I think one guy said earlier his art-faux blah blah got disrtibuted, your a one in a million, because you know thats not a big market, but one that loyally supports. But business is business, adam stated he wanted to pay back his investors, he wanted to do that, and he probably will more than likely. But what I also believe in is don't get mad get better. I love criticism, because 1 thing people say is good, other people say or horrible. So I just try and take a popular consesus on both and fix the issues, period. And for him to say he's only getting word from the "experienced" or "seasoned" is bs, cause in my case some of my best shots has been from someone waiting on set, who may come up with a crazy idea for a frame, or a way for an actor to deliver it. Because that person watches alot of movies and knows what they like to see, they couldn't tell you the difference between super 8 or 35, but they know that they like Chris Farraley and Van Damme movies.

Another thing is don't keep yes men in your circle, because you'll only get the results of what you want never the results you should get which inevitably are the ones that sell. SO for this site to provide criticism is a blessing the problem is that you have who have been doing this all their lives, are professionals or at least afficinados, and guys admit it, you know how we are when we watch movies, we scrutinize everything, we'll say, you know the movie is great, but I give it a 5 out of 10 because that squib didn't blow up fast enough, lol. That's why I love watching campy movies nowadays, because I don't have to watch out every second for continuity, framing, etc. Like I said this thread and site is a gift and a curse more of a gift.

All I know is I personally thank adam, because his mentality on securing funds, actors, crew, etc, has inspired and helped me get my money. So I personally thank him, same time for such a strong alpha personality I can't believe he'll step away from the thread just because a couple people don't like certain things about it (not reverse psychology I actually believe this), don't give a foreward like it's ot cc'd, mixed, etc if you don't expect to hear bad results. Thats why I normally don't do that, or like critiquing whenever someone has a foreward because that usually means its bad. But I also believe, as a decent editor, you can look at some of the rough shots you have and see what type of film, music video, etc, your going to get before your finish.

Lastly adam, if your gone brother, please come back, you personally inspired and helped me, and your gonna help others especially when you start talking about the rest of post, and festivals and distribution etc. Suck it up though dude, your not making some oscar winning boring movie, your making an action movie, your demo is a bunch of teenage pimple faced sexed charged teens or fat mid 30's singles guys, your movies gonna sell regardless or if it sucks or not:kali::kali::kali::kali::kali::kali::kali::kali:

Jeez a lot happened here in 24 hours!

I don't even want to take a stand here as to whether or not the critisism was appopriate. What worries me deeply is the fact that we seem to have lost the most interesting contributor this forum has had as long as I've been around. This thread is probably the single most inspiring thing I've read about filmmaking, and I am damn sorry to see it go, as I am sure there are still tons of interesting stuff to know about the post-production process of this project.

Adam, you will definately be missed and I will check back on this thread daily in the hope that you might change your mind. Good luck in any case.

Extremely disappointed to see the end of this movie's documentation. I do hope other users will post relevant information when it's released publicly, as I want to watch this as soon as possible.

If you're still keeping up with the thread Adam, thanks for making it.

edit: I kinda feel like my pet just died, if that's any indication of how enjoyable this thread was to follow.

Adam ...

I came over here specifically for you and to hear your words. I just joined today.

The word has spread about what you are doing and its very powerful the impact its having on other film makers.

Get up and get your ass back in the ring. Take center stage where you belong and blaze the trail with bravado and glory.

Don`t let anyones opinion of anything you do deter you from your mission and the good you have done with your contribution...I have only been reading here a couple of days now and your words have already changed everything for me. I am very grateful for your guidance and unselfish generousity.

The echos of the petty fade away the roar of the victor is evoked every time an act of valor is commited.

Keep fighting with your head up high. What you have managed to do is F_King incredible. No one can take that away from you...Ever!

I did a little searching an found this on youtube for people who are curious... (link deleted by mod)

I counted the responses and to begin with there were about 5 positive comments saying they looked forward to the movie. This was followed by about 6 negative comments plus others by people who hadn't seen the trailer.

I don't think the dvxuser 'community' can be represented by those dozen who said what they felt. Nevertheless, Adam's response was totally unexpected, I agree with what John said 100%. It's ugly to just tell people who haven't distributed a feature to f off, who actually sees movies anyway? Tarkovsky was a brilliant filmmaker who had trouble getting his movies distributed, there are countless others.

I'm going to have to defer to two people: Frank Sinatra "I did it my way" and my buddy Tom who had a great line in this movie"

"I decide what's right and wrong in THIS motherfuuccker" And I do.
Sounds like you do what you think needs to be done.

I had a great talk with my distribs, I know what they want and what they are expecting, and frankly nothing else matters.
But it sounds like what you think needs to be done it what the distribs think needs to be done.

Ain't it cool can go shove it in their ass - I have a movie to finish, and another soon to go in prepro and what matters is what the people who write the checks think - not a bunch of armchair quarterbacks. Who are some of you to lecture me or talk down about the project???
Chill man, I think Loki was just saying the criticism here isn't that harsh, compared elsewhere. And maybe you only care about the check writers, personally I care about the anyone who sees the movie, but I'd take a guess that many check writers are businessmen who want profits, ie they care about what the audience likes.

but you can bet I am sitting somewhere with my check and firmly in the midst of production on my second film.

Keep in touch with yourselves.
Cool bro, real mature. Its a bummer to see such enthusiasm and dedication go along with all that other negative stuff. Thanks for all the positive info while it lasted, it was inspiring.

Ok I saw the trailer amd judging these three mintues these are my conclusions.

1. Its going make money ( Lots )...Why?
2. It Kicks Ass...No appologies.
3. This guy is going to become a major player.
4. There is that elusive "It" in every scene...Call it the spirit of the under dog that prevails despite over whelming odds.

I will buy this dvd because of the raw performances and the nerve that is conveyed by these few short minutes. It packs a hellava a punch...And seems like a blast...No pun intended.

Adam, really sad to see you abandon this thread. :embarasse

Hopefully you return after a month or so of recharging.

Please keep in mind that for the seven or eight negative posts on the trailer, there were at least another dozen that were positive.

More importantly, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of DVXUsers like myself who have been following this thread, and sending you positive energy the whole time. We are the silent majority! Hope you eventually come back for our sake.

In any case, best of luck!!

Well if Adam thought it was a tough go here, from my last review

"Good idea, poorly executed .... when you develop talent please feel free to re-submit"

It's a tough world out there baby!

There is no evidence that Adam is using multiple user-names in this thread; an I.P. search has been cross referenced and there is zero correlation to substantiate this rumour.

-

I'm locking this down until Adam requests it reopened and decides n whether or not he wants to go forward here.

The arguing and bickering has grown old and is getting this thread no where. Maybe we should all calm down a bit.

After a brief hiatus.....I'm back.

Let me first tell you why I left - I think I left out one pretty important piece of info when I decided to go.

I've been pretty transparent with this blog as far as the good and the bad, but (obviously) I've withheld reporting certain things until they actually happen. It's OK for one or two things to not come to pass but if you develop a history of that, the blog is useless and you look like a bullshitter.

So when I put forth the footage for you guys to look at and render an opinion on, the part I left out was that I had a meeting with my distributors scheduled for Friday! Yes, yesterday at 5:45.

The purpose of the meeting was to show them my progress - not a finished trailer, but the rough material to see if there would be further interest on their part.

Obviously when about half of the reviews came back negatively, it really threw me off - here I have this big, ultra important meeting, and people are out there saying things like the footage was a let down, amateurish, etc.

Not only did that (of course) produce some hurt feelings, which I can live with, it produced something far worse: The bad reviews made me re-evaluate my vision for the footage.

With every bad review usually comes some advice. I started to follow that advice.

So here's how it went - on about day 2 of bad reviews (I didn't care about the good ones), I started cutting a new demo, one that incorporated most of the suggestions you guys had put forth. Do more of this - do less of that - etc. etc.

I was mere days from my meeting and I woke up one morning, looked at my trailer and I frankly didn't recognize my movie!!!!! It was if it was designed by committee!!!

It was not designed to be the best it could be, it was designed to please everyone. And along the way I had done something I never do - listen to people - and corrupted my vision.

At that point I was like - whoa - I need to leave this place for a while, delete the new trailer, and go back to the former things. I need to be noise free for a few days before this meeting and regroup.

So for those of you that thought I couldn't take the heat of bad reviews: Sorry, you're wrong. Was it annoying and hurtful? Sure, no doubt, but not enough to make me leave. The raping of my vision was far worse and when given the choice of keeping my vision intact or staying on DVXUser, it was an easy decision.

I had no idea the thread was going to be closed nor had intended that to happen.

Next installment: The meeting.
