How many hrs are too many hrs?

I am trying to buy a used DVX 100A. I can only find them on Ebay. I would like to know how many hours are too many hours? Some people say 200 or more hours are nothing. Some say thats too much. Also, what would be a reasonable price to pay for a 100A with 100-200 hrs?

THANKS'

Okay, I'm no expert, being a new DVX100B owner myself, but my owner's manual states that, with proper care, the recording head has a useful life of approximately 2,000 hours. If this is the case, and the DVX100A is the same, then a 100A with 200 hours on it should have about 1,800 hours of service life left in it.

Please remember that this is just the recording head life. You may and probably will encounter other issues during the course of using the camera. It's the same if a car has an engine life of 300,000 miles. That doesn't mean that you won't have problems and repairs for 300,000 miles. Also remember that a camera with more hours has a greater chance that the previous owner caused a problem that may not be noticed initially

there is no "too many hours" dvx and hvx's were made to last for a long long time
based on my experience I put over 2500 hours when I had my dvx, never failed as long as you give it maintenance on the heads

I've used DV-Rack for a long time with both of my 100As. I bought both cameras when they first hit the market. The camera I've used the most therefore, only shows 12 hours on the heads. Head wear is strictly related to running tape through a camera.

I don't get this....
does this mean as long as I'm not recording, the hours don't go up???
because I get hours on the metter as long as the pawer is on.
why??
is it because the tape is inside the camera? so if I take out the tape, hours won't show up anymore?

I've heard the hour meter counts how long your camera is powered on, and I've heard that it only counts when your heads are moving. Can anyone clarify this?

DVRack is software for recording straight to laptop. It bypasses tape entirely and thus no headware at all. The hour meter is related to using tape. Otherwise I'd have over a thousand hours on both my camera's tape heads.

I believe it only counts hours that the tape is in the drive, regardless of weather its running or not.

Yup.

I do a lot of sitting around waiting for bike riders to come by and my tape meter hours keep climbing......even if I only come back with 10minutes recorded.

That's actually something to keep in mind. The hour meter is NOT a measure of time that tape was running accross the heads. It really is just a measure of how many hours your camera was on with a tape in it. 200 hours on one camera could mean a lot more use than the same number on another camera.

Soon.........

I've been working my butt off building stuff to ride lately. In about 2 weeks It will be nothing but shooting for a while. I'm itching bad.

Check out the dirtjump section on ridemonkey and look at my earthworm thread.

Also keep in mind that most of our trails are just now starting to melt out.
