The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Just need a 'wimp' version of one of those guys and voila - the Hulk...although in all honesty would it be worth seeing yet another Hulk? I think not.

Ok, say you take one of those steroid pumped fleshbags and painted him green. Does that automatically make him the Hulk? Can he leap into the air covering miles in a single bounce? Can he throw a Tank? Not quite the same if he can't.

As far as the Hulk franchise and whether we need another movie, it depends on how they approach it. The Hulk is a ball of chaos and destruction, and there were some pretty good stories that have come out over the years. I'm waiting for the movies to get to the point where he has a strong intellect and fuzzy pink bunny slippers. Another story I would love to see is Planet Hulk. That ought to be interesting, but would likely need to be completely animated.

And by the way, I also asked if we really needed 20 Godzilla movies, but we still have them, don't we?

I would give the mouse the edge for speed and flying... until the Jolly Green Goliath splats him like a fly.

Okay, that's makes sense, I realize the question is specious in a way because, you know, the Hulk is actually a real person while Mighty Mouse is just a cartoon. But it's still an interesting argument.

Well, I took that into consideration, and treated MM as if he were real... Now UnderDog would be a different story.

Welcome to the movie business Marvel. You had a huge hit. And now you're going to have a huge bomb.

note to Marvel execs: movie advice #1: you don't remake a movie after 5 years, no matter how much better you think you can make it.

I'm not talking about what the production notes say it is or what Marvel is trying to tell Variety and Hollywood Reporter it is. I'm talking about how 99% of the people in the world perceive it - which is all that matters. In the public's eye this is a remake. And remaking a movie after five years just doesn't make sense. I have been in several movies where the Hulk preview played as well as heard my friends tell me the same thing. Stunned confusion by the audience. "Wait? Huh?" "I thought they just made that?" "What's going on?"

If they had called it "Hulk 2," and everything else was the same, then no one would have a question. Seems a pretty silly point to dwell on when it's just a matter of a word in the title.

No one seems to think "The Dark Knight" is a remake. (Though it kinda is.)

Even if they marketed it as a sequel (which they really haven't...if they mean to they sucked at it), the confusion would be equal to what it is now b/c even the many who saw HULK when it came out were impacted by it enough to remember a lot about it.

I think the only thing that made me think the new one was a sequel (before I read it somewhere) was the showing of the jungle and him on the run at which point I remembered the ending of HULK from 2003.

I wouldn't say that. My teenage Nephews (probably their demographic) understand that it's not a remake. I thought it was fairly obvious really?

well, pretty much every movie these days has a predecessor to which it is almost an exact copy of. That you are right about. The thing is, almost every one of those movies had at least a 20 year gap before they were remade - introducing themselves to a new generation of filmgoers. This movie is remaking itself after five years - to the same generation. This is very confusing. It's confusing to me - and like most people on this board, I follow movies religiously.

When you say that Star Wars and Jaws are doing the same thing, that's simply not true. It's true in the sense that those movies and their sequels are similar. But they're continuations of a storyline. This Hulk movie is not that. It's titled "Hulk" or "The Hulk", which, if my memory serves me correctly, is the exact same title as the one from a few years ago. If it's so obvious that giving the movie the same title won't be confusing, how come it's never been done before? How come all 6 Star Wars movies aren't titled solely, "Star Wars"? How come this latest Indy movie isn't titled, "Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark"? Because those movies are continuations of a story - and they want the audience to know that. By choosing the same title, The Hulk is conveying to the audience, "this is a remake" - "This is the same movie with different people in it".

The sad thing is, THEY can't convey what it is. If you ask them, they'll say, "well, it's sorta like a remake/reboot/sequel". When the studio itself can't even tell you what they're doing, you know you're in trouble. Anyway, I expect this movie to make 35-40 million first weekend, and end up with between 75-85 mil. It will be a huge bomb. Terrible marketing and a terrible idea.

The first was simply Hulk, the second is the Incredible Hulk. It is a continuation of the first, in that they aren't going into how he became what he is, but how he is trying to regain a normal life while the military is hunting him down. And yes, the Army is the main reoccurring theme in all the Hulk stories. I can't argue that they aren't really doing much to package it in an appealing manner, but we will see.

Exactly. If the entire movie was to rehash how he became the Hulk then it would be a remake. This movie shows how is hiding out and trying not to be discovered while searching for a cure. It also introduces a new enemy, The Abomination.

This movie is no different than the Batman movies introducing the Joker. Even more so since that has already been done before!

At least in the Hulk movie world it's all new.

I really don't get what some people are talking about here?

Obviously some people don't know anything about the new version.
And lastly, I'm glad that they just didn't call it The Hulk 2. Those titles are really lame. I'm happy to see that Marvel seems to be taking a new direction with this.

Mike
