Panasonic SD9 1080/24p HVX200 - Oh My!!!

I was going to buy either the 4g or the 8 gig SDHC. Why the smaller ones? I was also thinking of buying maybe a Takkeon(sp) as that would probably be cheaper in the long run and power a whole bunch of stuff..

Hey Justyn can you tell me how your liking the SD9 so far, or any chance you could post something shot with it? I'm gonna be in NYC at the end of the month, and I have a $150 gift card to BHphoto so I was thinkin of pickin' one up.

Sure thing. I'll post some footage next week. This weekend will be the first big event, but I can tell you that I LOVE this "little" cam. So much more functional than the HV20 and just a smart cam. It does have some frustrating things to it regarding the layout. Not sure what the engineers were smoking on a couple of things and it has the worst joystick for menu navigation that could ever be conceived. The only other drawback from being on the bleeding edge is that no one is making knock-off batteries yet so you are forced to pay 90 bucks for a 90 minute battery... That'll get fixed over time though.

So far I'm very happy and no more DIGITIZING. I simply hate digitizing footage. Seems so friggin' primitive after two years with the HVX. Thankfully I don't have to do that. THe other lovely thing is that you can get a great quality SD card for 40 bucks that'll give you an hour of uniterupted recording time. For 80 bucks, you can get two hours and those are at the cams max resolution. I can't wait to get the 32 gig cards which will allow for 4 hours of uninterupted recording. SWEET!!!!!

Here's something my buddy shot at the country fair. The SD9 camera shoots a glorious picture when there's enough light. Way way nicer image than the HDV off the HV20.

Check it out and I'll have some aerial stuff coming up later. Cheers:

I'm sorry but that's a straight up lie. Even the hf10 and hf100 produce a nicer image than the sd9 and neither of them puts out an image on par with the hv30. AVC hasn't bested hdv yet. Wait for this fall and then you can probably make that claim. Next year's batch of consumer camcorders will get there but this year's hasn't.

Sounds like someone is being quite confrontational and quite unprofessional. I had a HV20 and the colors were muted and it was totally washed out HDV. Take a look at the rodeo clip I put up, or our heli video and I NEVER got that kind of look out of the HV20.... and the HV30 would be the same. COupled with the worst Jello vision youv'e ever seen. If you want me to show examples of that horrible creation, then I will.. but don't call this a lie.

As stated, it's my opionion and it's an educated one.. Since I have owned both cameras. Do you have that same reference and have you seen the SD9 and it's sweet little body and nonlinear nature. It's just simply a better looking image, a smaller camera, CHEAPER, and without having to capture and deal with HDV.

Please keep your statments forthright and honest. If you are happy with the camera, that's cool.. but countless other people were not and have not been and returned it. It's a cool camera unless you want to move it around and put the codec through it's paces. .and if you do, you'll get garbage jello video. I'd love to slag the camera more and post it, but people know that it's what it is. Good unless you move or have vibrations or sudden movement.

I bought an hv30 and an sd9 at the same time and tested them side by side.

The hv30 was returned because as justyn said, in outdoor situations, the color of the hv30 was muted and washed compared to the sd9. AND the rolling shutter created some absolutely horrible motion wavering, both when the camera AND subjects were in motion.

Cry and moan all you want but you've got two people who have owned both cameras saying the same thing. It's not a 'lie'. What it may be is an accurate representation under certain usage.

There's several other people who'd done the same thing.. and Kid's mountain bike footage was the single largest reason that I bought the SD9. It handles motion so well and just looks so darn good, and it's such a small camera. Perfect for my application. There's no grandstanding or flaming going on here, just personal opinions. I would have loved for the HV20 to have worked for me, but it didn't and it hasn't for a few others, but I know several people who love and use that camera... but, not one of them is doing action stuff and doing things in extreme conditions. When you do, you'll see the Jello vision that's just so darn frustating.

Justyn:

Can you HEAR ME? :)

Greens look like what in the 24p cinema mode?

Please, I guess I've posted this inquiry six times.

thanks

Justyn. Bro. Help a brother out, shoot a chart on an HVX and an SD9, or shoot a side-by-side scene of grass or something. :)

I put up two clips in that other thread. Both in 24p mode. Lots of motion but you can see the colors, lots of it green.

I'll shoot something with both cams at some point. Just in the weeds on a client project. Kids stuff shows some great greens in 24p. the 60i stuff looks glorious.

This is a GREAT camera and it cuts well with the HVX stuff as I posted in the footage forum.

Thanks a bunch.

Boy, I hope that I wasn't doing something wrong because I spent three days with that cam trying to determine why the greens were blue and yellow
