XP fading in to the sunset...

Just a heads up. May 20 is allegedly the last day you can buy a PC with XP. My experience with Vista was ugly. It's unusable as far as I'm concerned.

Gotta pony up for a new notebook before it's too late.

I have vista for almost two months now and, other than then having a problem with it the first week which caused me to re-install, it has been running smoothly since. I use Adobe CS3 everyday and transfer P2 cards without a hitch. Its my main system and it has been great.

I don't see what the problem is in all honesty.

Crap.

I will resist Vista unto the bitter end, but Microsoft is a lot bigger than me, and they will sooner or later succeed in shoving it down my throat...

Or reformat your drive and install XP.
Then go online & install the 96 updates/fixes.
And wait for vista updates until the point it's usable.

thank goodness i have a corporate edition of windows xp so i can just install it on another notebook f i need to.

I purchased Vista notebook in March of 2007 and it was a train wreck. In every way.
Maybe they've worked out the bugs. I'm still hearing mostly bad stuff though still.

Here's what I say, if it ain't broke...

If your editing software works on XP and you're happy with it, why on earth would you mess with it?

Seriously, how much of this "stay with XP, Vista bad" is just the age old fear of the new? Wasn't it the same with Win2K vs XP? "Man, win2k is where it's at, XP is garbage" etc.?

I don't know, because I spend 95% of my computer time on a mac, and 5% on XP, and I have never used Vista.

FWIW it's not all roses in the Apple world either... personally, I'm staying on Tiger for the time being - I see Leopard as Apple's Vista... reports of instability, many longstanding OS X issues still not fixed with Leopard, and very little "value added" over Tiger. If it weren't for my having to buy new hardware sometime this year, I'd just as soon stay with Tiger or go to whatever's next after Leopard.

It is exactly that. People get into a comfort zone and do not like to be pushed into something new. While I would agree that early on Vista had compatibility issues with many programs and devices much of that has been ironed out.

I had an option between XP and Vista when I bought my new laptop. I decided to make the plunge into Vista. The first week was hell for some reason. Took forever to boot, bad install, plus a whole host of problems. I thought people we right about it being crapped and was even considering sending my machine back. But then I re-installed everything and its worked flawlessly since.

I just find it odd that people are petitioning a company to continue supporting a product. Most companies just stop supporting stuff without even caring. Apple does it all the time.

I beg to differ.

Vista is going to be a great OS eventually. It's my opinion that they raced it to market long before it should have been released. Also they have adopted a few policies that makes working with Vista and getting everything working a pain in the a...

So yeah sometimes there is a fear of the new, but Vista just aint ready... yet.

so till then I'm doing my best to stick to XP, but also following were Vista is going and wll transition when it becomes a realworld working OS .

Why is Vista so screwed up?

Especially the 64-bit version seems to be an Apocalypse Now :).

I mean, it's been quite some time since 2001 [XP].

[maybe someone should create a serious NLE and post-package for Linux.. I'd go there]

It's not, Vista has serious problems.

1. Why they even released the 32 bit Version is beyond me. It needs 2 GB to run ok, but can't use more than 3 GB. Hello? It would've been the perfect time to move to 64 bit, but no. And nobody cares much about Vista 64, the drivers situation is bad.

2. Vista and Vista SP1 are basically two different Operating Systems. They changed the core with SP1 to Server 2008.

3. It was a rush job. They canned so many features to get it out of the door quickly. Now they announced the successor for next year, which is basically what Vista/Longhorn was supposed to be.

4. One of the great new features is the UAC which was supposed to secure the system. But it doesn't serve any purpose besides from torturing the user.

5. It's a nightmare in corporate networks. It's slow, confuses the users, doesn't run critical applications, etc.

I know a guy who does official Microsoft training and big server installations internationally. He recently got a new laptop with Vista. He couldn't figure out to do basic stuff like configuring the Network. He solved it by installing XP as a virtual machine while shaking his head.

Why don't they make a decent NLE for Linux?

I feel a great demand for such.

The Force helps me feel things.
