Are current adapters ready for Reds Scarlet 3K camera resolution?

Just fun food for thought and obviously this is speculation of course, however this is going to be reality sooner than later. 2009 is just a little over 8 months off.

With what's known so far about Reds Scarlet 2/3 cmos 3k camera; how are
the current adapters going to perform with it? Just like people put adapters on other 2/3
pro cameras to gain that " look " , there are going to be people doing the same with Scarlet.
Red code at 3k should be quite clean and very sensitive to imperfect focus screens etc. How will they hold up?

Will current adapter designers need to seek out better focus screen designs & technology?

What would be great is Red developing a 35mm adapter; with their know how and capital they would for sure make one kick a*# unit.

In my personal opinion and with my limited knowledge i think the adapter makers are going to have to use glass with alot finer grains in it to achieve the film look. Otherwise i think the grains would show up really apparent and less smooth because of how high the resolution is in it. It's going to be interesting, i plan on pre-ordering one in hopes of somebody making one, otherwise i'll just sell my pre-order or the camera itself if i'm not satisfied. My main concern at the moment is the fixed lense that we are beginning with. a 2/3" chip is phenomenal, but it can only be as good as the glass it's shooting through, and red doesn't make very good lenses at all when compared to arri, zeiss, or angenieux. Even if those were attached to the adapter, ultimately the image still has the go through RED's glass :-/

Nine months is a long time. A relay lens instead of the built-in lens is not out of the Q, or could be optional (assuming the intended market would still go for the built-in for whatever reason). Nothing is out of reach since all pieces of the puzzle are laying around. Is just a matter of assembling them as required.

If you think a customer will have a Scarlet in his hands you will have another think coming. Early 2009 will no doubt change to mid 2009 with the first cameras going out late summer 2009.

Thats if it follows the same timeline as the Red one.

With a probable huge waiting list, most people will be lucky to see one before 2010.

Well, from what I can see, in theory the Scarlet is compatible with any two plane adapter. The questions I have personally are how fast is the fixed lens, whether the resolution will impact the way cinescreens are used, and lastly, would you even want to use an adapter on it? In theory, the answers are 'it'll be faster on the production model', 'no', and 'yes', but we'd need to play with one to know.

I thought the whole point of the scarlet was to be a high resolution but small and affordable cinema camera. If it needs an adapter bolted to the front of it to make it look like cinema then it clearly hasn't worked.

The point of an adapter is to get 35mm depth of field.
The scarlet is being marketed as an ultra affordable 3K camera.
Higher resolution has no bearing on depth of field.
And the 'ultra affordable' aspect would be virtually impossible wiht a 35mm sized sensor.

The 2/3" sensor should give you depth of field close to that of 16mm film.
If people want shallower depth of field than that then they will have to use adapters to get there.

It's all about options at this level. It's that simple. When the DVX came out others saw how to bring something more from the camera. It has all worked for the those who wanted to get more from their DVX's.

I see it as the same thing with Scarlet. Options, man. But, oooh what options. With the announcement that Final Cut Studio (with Color) being able to handle Red Code Raw files natively, it's really close to 'end game' for the independent filmmaker. Good indie material should explode onto the scene.

It's really not all that complex to me. Red should continue to blaze the trail and shake up the industry. The big boys have to respond but they won't. They'll continue to think that folks will crank out six figures for cameras that don't even do 2K. And, here comes Scarlet. It's enough to have an innovator in the mix. God bless him.

Boy, that's a very optimistic outlook on the quality of footages that are going to flood the internet.

its said to be a f.2.8 lens on it, I have no idea what the camera's ISO rating will be tho with that lens and a 2/3" sensor, but it should be good, I hope it has good macro!!!!I think the RED lens will be plenty nice for what we are ust to... I cant wait to see this thing wit the Sgpro with a nikkor 135 1.4 prime..... ahhhhh, get me a towel.....

I'm not optimistic about anything. I don't really have an interest or care what everybody else is doing. It's kind of like my netflix account. There's a lot of movies there but I only watch the one I want to see.

If the world is flooded with Red Digital cameras it still boils down to whether or not someone created something that I want to see.

One thing that I do mean about the explode on the scene comment. There are and always be some who will be able to take advantage of the technology and I believe that that number will be greater than it is now. Not just because of Scarlet. But, because the information super highway is on warp speed at this point and even more information is going to 'explode' onto the scene. It's that information that I think tools like scarlet and final cut studio etc etc will impact most.

I wish it was a little faster than f2.8, but you can't be too picky at this price level. As long as the camera's native ISO is good (maybe an improvement over the Red One's 320?) then we should still be okay in adapter-land.

well they said the mysterum X sensor will be much better in all aspects... I assume that to include ISO, hopefully around 500-600, but with raw you can get away with a lot more anyways.

2/3" chips look pretty SHdof with lenses wide open. Hence digiprimes. and they are usually T1.9 a T2.8 isnt going to kill you.

raw will help but it is ONE 2/3" cmos sensor, so it should be noisier than the other 3 ccd 2/3" cameras.

That's what worries me with this camera... that and trying to get 3k resolution onto a 1 2/3" CMOS chip, I would think that would impact the low light sensitivity of it as well ....

The red is about 320 ASA. This sensor is one half the size and 2/3 the resolution. So it should be about 1.33333 times less sensitive. That's a rough estimate as I don't know if this works in a linear fashion--i.e. one half the size equals twice as noisy or one half the resolution equals half as noisy

well, look at an APC sized sensor on a DSLR. they perform cleanly at ISO 400, and some of them are 10 megapixels. thats like 3.1kish....

Sensor technology is advancing. The HVX200a, is 7.5dB quieter and half a stop more sensitive. same size same pixel count.

True, true. I'm trying not to get my hopes up as the RED One is at 320. But who knows with the new X sensor - it could come in at 400- I'd love it if it came in at 500! No we have to wait and see ...... I hate waiting!

Yea but the grain structure of red @ 320 ASA is like my 5D at ISO 100. SCrew it crank it up to 640, and its still clean......

Though nothing is as pristine as a 5D @ ISO 50. ITs just sick....
