The new Rick Roll

Is this the one that won't go away??? (i.e. popups of lyrics?)

If so... it's been posted. If not... I don't want to know. At least not right now.

I'm sure curiosity will eventually get the best of me.

This is very funny. It's a cliche that all organizations have their own special culture. Can't you just smell "Microsoft" all over this? The unhip, the uncool, the lame. Amazing how appropriate it is. And yeah, it's a great rick roll to send to someone who's a fan of the boss :)

Wow... it's really not helping their image. I get that it's a joke, but it's not enough emphasis on the fact that it's cheesy. Just seems like they're being serious but having fun, without the intention of being cheesy.

It's like what my grandmother thinks a rock concert should be like.

Exactly Jon. It was like a tone deaf person doing karaoke; knows it's bad but keeps on going because "hey it's all fun!"

If you spend any time in (large) corporate culture, you're going to see this kind of thing all the time. Members of this very board produce exactly this kind of thing -- if not this PARTICULAR thing.

Every big corporation does it. It isn't art, nor is it meant to be.

Unquestionably, Apple has the same kind of thing.

Same kind of thing except probably hip and cutting edge and funny. :) (Kidding. Kinda.)

There's no question that Microsoft is out of touch. I think as OldCorpse said - this video probably conveys their corporate culture pretty well. "Unhip, uncool, and lame."

Most corporations do this sort of garbage. At my first job, I had to write and produce several convention videos for Jiffy Lube. Including one where I rewrote "Folsom Prison Blues" to talk about JL having a billion-dollar year. Wow. We even got Box Car Willie to sing it. Wow again. It hurts, it really does. Even today, 12 years later.

This is why corporate businessmen/women should not be in charge of creative decisions like this.

How does it work though? Does an idea like this go through a marketing team? Who decides on how a commercial turns out? Do they ever leave the creativity to a filmmaker/director?

It's not a commercial. It's an internal video, meant for the employees, to be used at meetings, etc., as a motivator.
