Sony FX-1 vs. HV20

Which is better for someone needing SD output (DV) and a little HDV for experimental shorts on the side.

The FX-1 has a sensor of 960x1080.
The HV20 (after the bayer processing reconstructs the CMOS raw output) will probably be in the same range.

fx - 1 is manual controls, another league of camera. They both produce great image but the hv20 is a ***** to work with in 24fps. Great little cam though. The great thing for me is, it acts as a deck for my XH A1, and i can take it on my trips instead of a big bulky camera that costs money to travel with.

What type of films are you shooting?

experimental films = pre-commercial stuff

experimental films = pre-commercial stuff

I'm trying to get a handle on filmmaking and somehow strive to make money at it.

For me, I want to achieve a few movies under 10 minutes long that I can potentially sell individually on the net and maybe step into something bigger. What I think is working in my favor is I've already worked in e-commerce and in film (professionally).

I have three categories of scripts I'm trying to produce in the next couple of months. Comedies, FX films, and (boring) narrative films with commentary on society.

Beyond the generalities I'm going to stay secretive to flesh out my "vision." Sorry.

I'm not sure about the FX 1-s 24 mode, but i have heard it is fake and choppy. Do a little investigating, or pick up a used dvx 100b. Manual features are key for making narratives and being taken seriously, without showing a little handy cam, although you know it is capable of great footage.

FX-1 blows in 24p

FX-1 blows in 24p

oops. I forget about the 'sucking in 24p mode' the FX-1 makes. FX-1 is a great camera minus the fact that 24p is broken. Though, I've heard that 24p in HV20 blows, because one has to deinterlace it in the most screwy method.

I guess I'll have to wait until Monday when RED announces their scarlet camera.

This thread is great. It prevented me from plunking down $800 on a whim.

24p in the HV20 does not blow. Just needed to clear that up.

HV20 24p is a bit hassle, but it looks great. Certainly not any more of a hassle than converting AVCHD footage for a non-supportive NLE.

I think i'm going to have to agree with the few who mentioned the DVX100. While it's not HD, it's got better manual and technical features than the FX1 or HV20
