El Centro Airshow - 1st XHA1 Shoot

Hey All,

Got to use my XHA1 at the El Centro Airshow this weekend. First time using it other than a bit of practice shooting. What a nice rig! Used a netural density filter and did a little bit of color grading in Avid. The 20x zoom is great for events. My DVX just doesn't have the reach for this kind of event. Show center was about 1/4mi away from me. NAF El Centro, CA, is the winter training base for the Blue Angels and this show is their season opener.

Click below for a 5min HD video. I make no claims as an operator so I hope you don't get motion-sickness!

There's a few more stills at the link below.

Very nice shots! Looks fantastic. Sometimes I wonder whether to use my crappy digital camera with better resolution or my A1 which produces low resolution photos but way better quality.

Nice! Are those stills from video, or photographs taken with the A1? The quality of the images is quite good; I'm impressed.

Those look great, very well done. I wouldn't be able to follow planes like that or frame them properly during a live event lol. Live event recording isn't my strength thats for sure, so kudos.

Thanks all for the replies!

The stills are frame-grabs of the video from Avid, downsized in Photoshop.

Some video would have been better.

I put together a quick 5min HD video and posted on vimeo. I make no claims as an operater though. Be forwarned if you get motion-sickness!!

I really like vimeo, first time using it, but it doesn't handle the subtle gradient colors in the sky too great. Looks much better before uploading. Feel free to download the raw file. Link on bottom right. Oh well, for an online video it actually looks pretty good I think...

C & C welcome as always!

Nice and clean. I downloaded the hi-res version also. I may try motion tracking the hand held movement for reuse. At any rate it's a good reference.
The Harrier rocks.
No crits this time hehe.
-Thanks.

In case anyone has an interest...

I posted the complete Blue Angels performance. Only 3mbps so it looks so-so, I guess, but still a good watch.
