4:3 lcd monitor, shooting squeezed 16:9 on dvx HELP!

Hey all,

Ok so this is my dilemma:

I need to use an external monitor for basic framing.... nothing to fancy. so i figured i could use an old HP 17in 4:3 LCD. i can buy an adaptor that converts VGA to RCA, so that is how i will plug in my dvx100b.

what i fear will be the problem is that once it is outputted to the HP monitor the dvx squeezed image will remain squeezed (because on the 100b it frames it properly for you, but that doesn't translate to an external LCD)

what should i do?

thanks,

Shoot letterbox?

Shoot letterbox?

Personally I have done some tests shooting squeeze and letterbox and upscaling in post and the letterbox footage looks a lot cleaner in my opinion. Other then that I think you would need to get a widescreen monitor.

You could just get used to looking at the squeezed image. Regardless of the stretching, you should still be able to frame and compose just fine.

how would you do the the cropping in post?

with the monitor problem aside i am debating if i should shoot squeezed or letter boxed and then just crop out the black bars in post... would this alleviate the problem with losing resolution with squeezed? if so how would i go about cropping it in post

thanks for the input guys... i made the decision to just shoot squeezed... i think that will be good for my project... i am interested though on finding out if shooting standard 4:3 (not letteboxed) then cropping in post is any better... i have read a lot of the stuff on here but i still dont get how you do the cropping.
