PREVIEW of the NEXT VFX FEST!!!

Mark Johnson

The Dude Abides
We're going to make every effort to entice people to enter the next VFX FEST by doing a challenge that will appeal to a wide group of people with a broad spectrum of talents. Thus, starting next Monday we will be commencing a 2-WEEK fest having the theme of URBAN DESTRUCTION.

We'll be providing a directory of material to choose from (both short clips and static images) or you can shoot your own. You'll be asked to create a small QuickTime file (<20 megs) that depicts an urban environment in ruins. You PhotoShop mavens can go nuts adding cracks, crevasses and blast holes while you particle monsters can depict smoke, flames or even explosions if you so desire. We'll let you use your imagination and resourcefulness to tell the story you wish with the only restriction being that you have to begin with undamaged buildings as a basis to work from.

You can make this as elaborate or as simple as you wish. Realism and drama are the key points to focus on and collaboration is encouraged.

To pique your interest further, there will be a prize for the winning entry!

More details, official rules and a link to the directory of source material will be provided at the stroke of midnight (Pacific Time) April 5th!!!

Whooho! I hope I can get my new notebook soon :) Need some more horsepower to participate in these VFX fests... Keep up the good work Mark!

Wow Mark. You've really ramped this up in short order.
I don't think I'll be able to enter this one but I'll probably play along on the sidelines.
Good luck everyone and excellent job again Mark.
//You too Matt ofcourse for starting this whole thing.

Hmm, this is something I can do.

I have a few ideas I've been testing before. Might implement those in this fest, we will see.

Should be a lot of fun guys!!! raptor, you HAVE to enter!!!! Perhaps you would want to collaborate with someone and not have to put too much time in??? We need you dude!

hehe thanks Mark. Actually I've been having splitting eye-stress headaches from having my face stuck in a computer screen day in day out, hehe.

Maybe if I take a break for a couple days I can get back too it. We'll see. It's all good.

I am more than willing to calaborate with someone on this. While I can hold my own in Phoshop, that is usually geared to photo enhancement of people. And while I have been given tasks before to take OUT major flaws from photos, rebuild, and while I can do that well, this is exactly the opposite.

Not sure how well I can take something and destroy it. But a little partcle action and maybe some things going on in the sky? That could be cool.

Frame size and rate for this project please?

Frame size and rate for this project please?

I'll be posting all the rules on Sunday evening, Matt. This time around we're going to let people choose their own frame size and frame rate with the only restriction being the maximum size of the clip uploaded. That will allow people to do any aspect ratio they wish as well as reducing the frame rate if they want to get a longer running length within the size limit.

We'll have enough flexibility to let people play to their own strengths, but hopefully we'll have several collaborative efforts as well.

I have a couple of ideas I'll be exploring. If it looks doable I'm in.
After all, I still have half a jar of Tylenol left. Whoohoo.

Sweet! Looks like this one is going to rock. I'm a little concerned on the video part of the challenge, however. Perhaps I can look to a friend for help on this one.

Kyle, when we post the rules I'll be discussing this issue (how to animate matte paintings or enhanced images). I know your skills well so just plan on doing some of that high-end photoshopping and we'll hook you up.
