FEATURE: "WHITE KNUCKLES" – a film by SABI

I can't wait to see this. You don't see many independent films, or really any films at all, with elderly leads. At least I haven't seen many films covering the subject matter. Looks like it'll be very interesting.

I like the trailer. I like the record metaphor and the end and the way you worked that into the editing. As always, looking forward to it. And do I detect a glimpse of Marion in there? Hope that's her name (I should go watch your movie again. Alas, it is late). But the girl from IFHY. Which will be an absolute pleasure to watch again.

You rock. Let me know how I can get a copy (as well as the other one) or where I can see the two.

Thanks so much for the feedback D, something else that you and others might find interesting about the fantastic actor Marion Kerr is that she in fact plays the same character "Amber" in White Knuckles and Heart of Now - just at different points in time, and different points in Amber's life. White Knuckles will be released first, but actually takes place a few years AFTER Heart of Now (in the time-line of their world).

Kevin

P.S. to answer where you can screen the films when released at a city near you / or to get an copy on DVD / HD, please take a moment (I hate to ask this) to sign up at the sabi pictures White Knuckles & Heart of Now private mailing list at:

thanks kyle. kevin took the photo and said please make a poster of this. and i did. it is actually the sort of poster that gains new relevance after you've seen the film. but i can't say what that is. sworn to secrecy.

thank you all so much for your feedback. we've found it incredibly useful. Can't wait to hear more thoughts!

Given that I've promised some posts on our marketing campaign and it's continued development, I will post some of our 'photo rejects' before settling on this one for our Poster for White Knuckles (2008).
There is something that is tonally correct about the photo, and settling on a poster is the hardest thing for a filmmaker to do (besides settling on a trailer) when it comes to maketing an indie film. Would you all agree with me? Personally, it's important for me that the trailer tease the viewer without giving them the whole story - and that the poster do the same. We've all sat in a darkened theater and watched trailers that we check off in our minds as "interesting" or "not gonna see it". Which means, we sometimes make a 2 hour film just to make a 3 minute trailer to get people to watch the film. I think it's best not to cheat the audience out of the experience they are going to have in the film too - but at the same time, give them what they are looking for. A film that is more commercial than artsy-fartsy lends itself to cutting a trailer a lot easier than an "art" (in quotes) film. I think people want to be thrilled, for the most part, when they sit down to watch trailers. In a dramatic and suspenseful film (IMHO) like White Knuckles, where there are many twists and turns we wish not to reveal at this time in the campaign -- we felt a minimalist poster like this one would do justice to the artistic nature of the film, but also not give much away. We put the same thought into this version of a early teaser/trailer. (technically it's longer than a normal trailer, but thankfully the TRT police is letting this one go). We hope that what people gather from the trailer when it is finished might compel them to watch the film someday, be it in the theater, on DVD or downloaded. Ultimately, the most important thing for us, was to get the word out about what we're in the process of finishing - a little film we're proud of called White Knuckles. I really do appreciate all the feedback on the poster & the trailer & I look forward to sharing the continuing and evolving adventure of our little film about old people!

Movie Poster Rejects - White Knuckles (2008) Marketing Campaign.

Movie Poster Rejects - White Knuckles (2008) Marketing Campaign.

Tao,

I like that movie poster, dude. It's simple yet effective.

Those are very kind words - thanks for the feedback!

As mentioned above, I'm posting here are the "rejects" for the key art for White Knuckles. Maybe someday they'll be useful in other campaigns. Thanks to Thomas and Nicole for all their help, both are terrific artists that came up with all of these. Ultimately, we settled on Zak's artistry.

So here we are!!!!

THE WHITE KNUCKLES (2008)
MARKETING CAMPAIGN REJECTS
KEY ART REJECTED POSTERS BY SABI

These rejects were proofs killed in the planning stages
and are being released exclusively on DVXUSER.
Be Gentle to the artists that are letting me release them unfinished....

Ultimately, none of these felt like White Knuckles to us at sabi

Not sure if the music worked for the trailer. The end was kind of weird, saying the name of the movie twice.

Nice shots! What was this filmed on?

robert, i was swindled into being cinematographer on this piece. that's joke of course. this was a rare project to be a part of. and challenging in many respects. for once! a challenge! it was shot with two naked HVX200s, each wielded by an operator strapped into a glidecam rig.

kevin, i enjoyed the music very much. DOWNtempo. I DIG IT. and the poster is also very evocative... in that sky i see turmoil and light, hope and hopelessness. spring can't come soon enough for those maddeningly bare, lifeless trees.

SOUND DESIGN : PRODUCTION DAY - WHITE KNUCKLES (2008)

We had an excellent sound design session one day last week with Mr. Zach Seivers - an incredibly talented sound designer that we've been lucky to have worked with on a number of projects, most notably White Knuckles and Heart of Now. Zach's attention to detail and enthusiasm for exploring his art with sound was in full effect during the session, which was grueling and lasted most of the day.

For anyone that's never went around field recording in a large, old building - (that's operational but after hours) - please, please try it. It's a mediation of sorts on the sonic landscape that surrounds you that most of us barely notice. It's and adventure, and we explore with our ears, and use our other senses to grasp how in fact we can better record what we are hearing.

Zach used a Sanken CSS-5 and swears by it:
http://www.sabiforum.com/showthread.php?t=190

Zach and I spent the day exploring the sonic landscape of the production offices at Sabi and the surrounding studio, including

WHITE KNUCKLES - SOUND EFFECTS - VOLUME 1

1. Heavy metallic door closing, slamming.
2. Slamming with 5 floors of echo reverb.
3. working elevator shaft sounds
4. ddeep and shallow air duct vents
5. metallic and concrete stairwells
6. electrical generators
7. electrical hums, buzzes, (great for sounds of lights, flourescents)
8. door slams with echo (sound of a large car door slamming with echo & reverb)
9. empty spaces and shafts
10. whirring fans
11. deadly dark corridors.
12. heavy boiler rooms,
13. morbid silences
14. and haunted corridors
15. a REALLY freaky drippy faucet that everyone will want to use for their next horror film
16. THE HIGHLIGHT;

16. Was the highlight of the day - MOST AMAZINGLY it lasted for 15 minutes of recording : Zach set up for a 15 minute take of the most horrid, horrifying, electrifying, beautiful sounds of beeps, screeches, screams, chains, scraping, mettalic slams, chatter, haunted rhythms and echoes (recorded simultaneous, raw & live -- 4 levels beneath the bowels of a los angles building structure in a large tunnel (think Rave). Probably one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

It's astonishing one man generates such sounds, and his true genius came out. It must have been what it was like to have watched Mozart muse on the piano.

We hope to make available the WHITE KNUCKLES Sound Effects Volume 1 soon... discount of course to DVXUSERS (cost, basically)

When came back and listened to the results - we know that we have recorded what will make for excellent sound design options for the abstract sequences in a key moment in White Knuckles, when a character is in great distress...

Zach and I were so excited by what we heard (Zak Forsman was in on the session and shot some BTS as well) we felt like it would be wrong not to share it - somehow, with those that would like to use it. Astonishing what we heard, and Zak shot some video to prove it.

We're trying to work out the logistics of leaving all of the tracks above in a compilation for users to purchase.

we'll be sure to post some samples on the website for his new production studio.

would there be interest in this kind of thing?

zak and kevin are the bomb diggity for rizeal yo.

thanks kyle,

that means a lot to an interdependent filmmaker like me,

wish i could include that on the movie poster:

White Knuckles (2008) - a film by sabi

"compellling... don't miss this..."

"an artful modern day 'who's afraid of virginia wolfe..."

"...the bomb diggity for rizeal yo..."

You're the **** kyle, thanks for the feedback

Zach Seivers just lit the creative candle,

we are taking three sips of our respective beverage

and beginning with the mention of a prayer (but not actually).

Zach just took his shoes off and dimmed the lights....

Welcome to
Our THIRD Mixing Session together!

This is Just before Zach walked in.
Photo22.jpg

Zach just worked on the opening shots of the film, the images of the smokies that are also in the preview trailer. He created a cold dreamy landscape, a feeling of desolation and loneliness, insecurity. The birds chirping in the autumn tennessee forest keep us from falling from our precipice ... too far into the sprawling canyon before us...

and it's hard for us to wake up from this beautiful haunting dream... just as it is for julie...

i shot some BTS of zach doing his thing. I wish I had his Sanken CSS-3 mic to record what he's doing in here.
