"WHITE KNUCKLES" – a film by SABI

I hope to use this thread to update everyone on the finishing process of our upcoming feature film White Knuckles. Though I'm not technical by nature, I'm surrounded by amazingly talented people that are and can help explain some of the process we are currently going through with the film. I will offer my thoughts from a director and producer's perspective on all of the following for those that might be interested:

Some topics I hope to hit are:

1. The process of Sound Designing, Recording & Mixing White Knuckles (2008) (Zach Seivers is doing our mix - an amazingly talented young sound genius that we're glad to have aboard.)

2. The process of color grading White Knuckles (2008) (Addison Brock III is our colorist, his eyes and attention to detail will take the film to another level)

3. The process of outputting our feature (shot HD 720p on the HVX-200 p2).

4. The process of securing music rights for our film.

5. The first screening & the marketing campaign for a film like this

3/15 OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Sabi Pictures is pleased to announce the forthcoming release of White Knuckles – the next in a series of high-quality independent feature film experiments that have screened worldwide, at festivals, and garnered critical attention for their courageous storylines, powerhouse performances, unique visual style, and highly unconventional creative process.

“…the result is… a relentless and haunting parable about forgiveness... a floating, ghost-like voyeuristic cinematic style that searches the face for clues, as if to save us from the uneasy feeling that the tide is rising...” ---Shrina Anya; film critic noend press

A Short Description:

Julie, a sweet, subdued career housewife seems perfectly content in her life with her record player, houseplants, cooking despite her irritable husband of 40 years whose hobbies are sleeping and/or watching tv on the couch. Provoked into a sudden state of fear – Julie’s once innocent eyes now become watchful and suspicious, and her perception of reality makes a dark shift. Her husband William is both the unsuspecting victim faced with his mortality; and the self-loathing villain guilty of bad decisions and haunting karma. Between them is an escalating WAR - a self-destructive cloud threatening to ignite the forest with even the slightest friction. If the cycle is to break, both must be awakened to the raw reality of a true life or death choice…

“Right from the shockwave at the beginning of the film… Ashworth and Strauss take us on a… fearless roller coaster ride until the absolute last breath...” ---Shrina Anya; film critic noend press

The writer/director/producer Kevin K. Shah and co-producer Zak Forsman, along with associate producer Jamie Cobb and their team of artist-filmmakers, engage in a radical creative collaboration with an incredibly talented cast of actors that gave themselves fearlessly to this film. Through guided improvisational scenarios crafted to capture deeper truths as they emerged – the bold process was designed to abandon the script entirely before the end of production to make for an honest resolution that could never have been staged. What ultimately unfolds on screen is a compelling human drama that is terrifying and meaningful, darkly funny and suspenseful. White Knuckles take us on a courageous journey to redemption.

What is WHITE KNUCKLES?

How could it be that after 42 years together, William and Julie have lost sight of each other and are picking each other apart? What is the source of their conflict? How dark must it get before change can happen? What if death was a possibility?
These are some questions we journeyed with as this film unfolded during production.

What was the process?

White Knuckles results from a deep collaboration between the filmmakers and a cast willing to take risks without feeling judged or vulnerable. Where Larry and Martie take the hearts and minds of their characters is incredibly courageous and often feels uncomfortably real. Their gritty depictions resonate with the kind of heartfelt honesty that is rare on screen, and their acting is the farthest thing from rehearsed 'performance'. Basically, the idea was to create, seek out and discover moments of deeper understanding between Julie and William that could not have been pre-determined.
We took the scripts back before the end of production and opted to capture the remarkable conclusion of Julie and William exactly as it happened.

wasn't a fan of the trailer.

I opted to not read anything before watching.. seeing what I could get from the trailer.

not a whole lot... I guess the films about a married couple that is having issues in their later years... did I miss something?

I'll read up on this film some more.

Trailer just didn't really do it for me.

thank you for the words wartez, that means a lot - there is so much more than what you see depicted here, stay tuned for more. And we look forward to sharing more about this film with you & seeing your work as well!

I loved it. Real people with real problems and real thoughts. Looking forward to this one. Techinically the trailer rocked as well, you guys have a very talented crew. If I had to complain - didnt care for the flashing treatment of the few credits at the very end. I'd either make them flash faster and toss a little pulsing blur/glow in or do nothing at all. Top notch work guys. Also looking forward to the blogging of all of the work it will take to finish this. Stuff like this is the next best thing to being on the production. Thanks for the look, and congrats to all involved!

I like the trailer. I like the record metaphor and the end and the way you worked that into the editing. As always, looking forward to it. And do I detect a glimpse of Marion in there? Hope that's her name (I should go watch your movie again. Alas, it is late). But the girl from IFHY. Which will be an absolute pleasure to watch again.

You rock. Let me know how I can get a copy (as well as the other one) or where I can see the two.

Yes, that's Marion! WHITE KNUCKLES is actually the FIRST project we cast her for, in a supporting role... a year later she was our lead in our second feature HEART OF NOW and a month or two after that we made the short IFHY together. funny that the last one is what made it to the public first.
