Just got my SGPro... Nikon 1.8 or 1.4??

I literally just recieved my SGPro in the mail (incredible quality, thanks guys over at shoot35). I spent the last 30-40 mins setting it up with my DVX... Im all ready to go, except i now need a lens.

Im definately buying a Nikon lens (cuz i have a D80). Ive read all the reviews all over the net and it basically seems like the Nikon f/1.4 lets in a little more light and looks better wide open - and the Nikon f/1.8 is also a great lens, but has a cheaper build, BUT its a third of the price as the 1.4.....

Has anyone used both the Nikon 1.4 and 1.8 with a SGPro on a DVX by any chance, lmao?!?!?!?

DX lenses don't work on adapters because you need a power source to open the iris. Most likely your d80 uses DX lenses. There is a sticky at the top of forum that goes into which lenses are good choices to have. I prefer the fastest lenses that you can afford.

Which Nikon f1.4 and f1.8 are you looking at when you see that price difference?? An older 50mm f1.4 (Ai or AiS) is only about $100 in most shops.

What smithy says is important - don't get the DX lenses. The older Ai and AiS lenses will also work on your D80, but only in manual mode, and the effective focal length will change when you mount them on your D80. But it is nice that your lenses can be dual-purpose (I use Nikons for my M2 and my D50).

Definitely not the one you should get...IT is AF..you want MF lenses only. They are listed under film camera lenses and not digital.

you can use the 1.4D buuut the focus ring will probably be fairly short because its AF so it will be hard to pull focus smoothly.

No that lens works fine, I've used on the brevis, but like moojangles said the throw is crazy short.

ecking.. every time i read a post by you i have a mental breakdown. your sig makes no grammatical sense. you left out the "be". oh and george bush doesn't care about black puppets :D

I rather have the 50mm AF lens so that I can use it both on the 35mm adapter and my DSLR.

Either way, all the nikon DSLR lenses have short focus throw anyways. IF you want a long focus throw, you have to get the Zeiss lenses, which are all MF only. Short of using true Cine Lenses, there are all sort of compromises that we have to live by.

You can use the AI and AI-s lenses on your nikon dslr. They just won't have autofocus. Which are you more interested in: having an easier time focusing with your adapter (manual focus lens) or having an easier time focusing with your camera (auto-focus lens)?

Lol and to think I've been using it misspelled all this time. I never read it after I typed it so i didn't know. Just for you I'll fix it. :2vrolijk_08:

I would definitely rather have an easier time focusing with the adapter.

...and yes, from what I understand, you can pretty much use any nikon f mount lense on any nikon SLR camera - the older lenses just wont autofocus on a new digital Nikon.

I was considering the Zeiss 50mm 1.4, but Ive read that the bokeh is horrible...

No autofocus, and you have to be in manual mode on the camera to use it. And you have to stop down the aperture manually.
