Quality of A1 in 24F

I wanted to know if shooting in 24f mode with an A1 will reduce video quality. I was at a local store today (Calumet in NYC), and I was comparing the DVX100B to the XH-A1. I was told by the sales rep that shooting in 24f with the A1 will result in similar video quality as shooting in 24p with the DVX. I asked the rep how this could be, and he explained that the A1 only outputs 1080i when shooting at a standard frame rate. He said that when shooting in 24f, the picture that I am trying to achieve will look just as the video from a DVX in 24p because they will both output the same film-like quality that I'm trying to achieve. I am leaning towards the A1 for its HD capabilities, but if what the sales rep told me is true, then maybe I should get the DVX to same some money, but for some reason, I don't feel that what the rep told me was completely accurate. Any input?

I think the sales rep just means that the 24p cadence will be similar between the 2 cams. The image quality will be totally different because of course the XH-A1 is high definition. Yes there is probably a slight loss of vertical resolution compared with 1080i but it will still be much much sharper than the DVX.

He may have been trying to explain how the F mode on the Canon is the same as shooting 24P on the Panasonic. Canon's choice to call their progressive modes "frame" has been the source of a lot of confusion. As far as the quality, the Canon in HD is much better than the DVX, as it should be. When both cameras shoot in SD they are very comparable. I owned both cameras, and sold my DVX after getting the A1. The Canon loses a little bit of resolution when shooting in the progressive modes, but unless you are shooting resolution charts you aren't going to notice.
If the salesman was saying that using 24f on the Canon in HD, is the same quality as the DVX in SD, then he probably has severe vision problems, and he should see a doctor immediately.
