Great news for Canon users!

Today at work I tried the memory card recording unit that ships with the Z7U on my canon A1 and it works perfectly! At every frame rate! Tapeless to compact flash was so awesome to use, you have no idea how happy I am.

I never for the life of me thought it would be Sony that delievered the perfect solution for tapeless capture to people that already owned cameras. I played back the footage in both mpeg streamclip and VLC and it was glorious.
The sony rep told me the HVR-MRC1 is gonna be available for sale (in canada) in a couple of months. I have no idea what the price is gonna be but I can't wait to buy it.

What is the cost of the unit? What is the size and weight? Where can we purchase it from?

Great Find btw

How big is this thing? What does it look like? I've googled around and can't find images of the recorder only the cameras that support it.

I am planning on buying a Firestore any day now, and this may sway my options majorly if this thing is somehow mountable and reasonably affordable...

if its sold with the camera im sure you can buy it from a sony repair shop, like if you damage your original.

Nope I spoke to sony and was told in a few months they'll sell it separate. It's about the size of an ipod mini and a bit wider. On monday when I go back to work I'll take some pics of it with the A1.

Likely to be more expensive than the Firestore? I know it's all speculation, but does anyone know an approximate price range?

Awesome. Thanks ecking, for the pics and info. I'm liking the looks of this device. I've been looking at that new AVC-HD HMC-150 Panasonic cam that should have more info available at NAB. At the same time, I don't want to get rid of my A1 anytime soon. This would be a nice solution for A1 tapeless when needed.

My only worry is that it will be expensive. Sony isn't usually the most economical brand when it comes to camera gear.

Record to compact flash?

Record to compact flash?

Can someone show me what I need to record to compact flash? I see items discussed her that point to DV recorders (Hard Drive).

I have Canon XH A1

Sony hasn't released any US marketing info (at least not as of Tuesday), but the Japanese info on the unit seems to put the price at around $800 US or possibly even less than that! From everything I've heard/read on this thing, it'll record every mode in pretty much every camera... folks over at dvinfo.net/conf are saying that it'll work with the JVC HD series cameras, now we're seeing compatibility with the Canon XH series (and I'd assume the XL series as well), and obviously it'll work with all the Sony cameras... this could turn out to be a huge seller for the Sony corporation if they can really service everyone's cameras with this little device...
