hello masters of DV and HD. I have a conundrum. I am shooting a feature in Black and white. We have a small budget and I am trying to convice the director that HD or HDV will be a better choice then film because it will allow us to do more things with the meger budget then spend it all on film and processing costs. Does any one know of any great examples of Black and white footage shot on HD or HDV or any related articles?

you can certainly achieve very beauitful black and white cinematography with HD. There are lots of in-camera features for getting the best of the colours in anticipation of going to black and white in post...most notably the master pedestal will help you achieve really strong blacks.

I recently shot a black and white short on the HVX and found that you can get some great results. It is worth experimenting with to see if you can get the results you are after.

I like cranking up the gain when shooting for b/w. The noise looks way better in b/w than in color. Color noise, blah!

I'm not particularly a fan of grain in general, but I will agree it's much more acceptable and less awkward in b&w than in color.

Usually with the option of film, I always go with film, however budgetary restraints being what they are. Here is a sample of video B&W, on a broadcast monitor there is more info in the blacks, but not bad with H.264 compression.

You might want to seriously consider shooting in color, then in post, throw away the red and blue channels, then de-saturate the green channel.

That should give you really clean HD black and white. Do some tests though.
