Xlh1 For Trade!

There's only one reason I could've fathomed not taking this deal and that would be if you didn't plan to make money with your setup.

And even still, if you're good, then the H1 would've paid for itself regardless. That said, the HVX200 is sure easy to get paid off just through rentals.

It's STILL the worst of the HD cams as far as image goes, but gets THE most play. And, you really can't deny it's gravity.

I have to agree here. I did a shoot last fall where we used both the XL-H1 and the HVX200, and the HVX200 footage was just too soft in comparison. Wasn't bad on its own, but when it was intercut with the H1 footage, it all just looked out of focus.

Now, I did shoots with the H1 going uncompressed out via HD-SDI and in combination with a mini35 and cineprimes ... now that footage is in a whole other world that the HVX200 can't touch.

Maybe using a monitor, HD-SDI out and a non-HDV deck to record to the XLH1 doesn't suck - but if I'm gonna go through all that hassle I'm sure as hell not wasting my time with the Canon. I don't know what settings you were using on the HVX but in all the comparos I've done with the 2 rigs the H1 NEVER finished first for anything including focus after the HDV codec got done chewing it up.

Besides the many, many, many other shortcomings of the XLH1, the only other tiny snag that kills it is the fact that the HDV codec meets none of the HD networks broadcast delivery requirements. The only time I've seen HDV footage accepted is for SD shows and when treated as SD footage in HD shows (less than 10% of the show can be comprised of HDV footage). If it's being treated as SD by the networks, why would you want to waste your time shooting HD with it?

Anyway, it's probably fine for weddings, bar-mitzvahs, and student films. Masochists probably love it too.

Wow, everyone back off this guy. Do not bother taking the bait.

I'm just saying, though: THE SIGNAL (2008) Feature FIlm shot on what?

Oh yeah! XL-H1.

That's going to be one great wedding video!

OMG, THE SIGNAL??? Why didn't you say so? I would like to retract all of my previous statements and issue a personal apology. Thank you for correcting me before I said anything embarrassing.

Just out of curiosity, is that the same "The Signal" that has 3 directors and their DP credited as the gaffer on IMDB? How does that work exactly? Not trying to pick on you, I'm just trying to get inside the mind of whoever thought using an XLH1 to shoot a feature with a budget was even a remotely good idea.

The budget was very small. They each directed a portion of the movie and had been working on it forever.

IN fact, I believe they used to be on DVXuser then moved to XLCinema.Com when Elton started that site.

Yup, the same movie, shot with XL-H1's and 35mm Adapters. Can't remember which, though.

Something to be said about worrying about the equipment instead of what you're doing with it. How many of us sold a feature film for 1.5mil?

HVX200 isn't the best cam on earth, by far. But it's the most versatile and the one you can pay off in no time just through rental requests alone. I'd be wary of the new wave of Canon Cameras... if they're AVC-HD with A1/H1 flavor you're gonna see a lot of people migrating to Canon Camp.

well i must take the bait...

besides the resolution benefits of the h1... its also a shoulder mount camera, which will get you far more cred if you are doing docs... and it is also the only camera, i am aware of in this price range with true 4-channel audio, besides the RED... which is not in the same price range.

here are two more pictures of the camera,

Hi Shane,
I Love your Rig and I'd really love to know How the shoot gwent with the HVX
and if you think it would have been better with the XL-H1?
It would truly be nice to hear from someone who has actually lived with the XL
for more than a job or two. I know it has a higher learning curve and just getting used to things can be enough to turn some against it. Your opinion would be TRULY
appreciated.
So are you personally Happy with the HVX or are you dying to have your back-up XL back ? Have a great week!

hmm ... I did the shoot with both cameras as "stock" cameras, nothing else on them. The Canon just looked a lot better, IMHO.

Now shooting with the extra stuff (adpater, uncompressed, etc.) puts the footage in a whole different league.

I've owned the XLH1 since it came out and I can tell you that I have been more than happy with the camera. Very excellent image and tweakability from the camera. Also the versatility is what I love.

I am doing a shoot this weekend with the XLH1 with a mini35/Zeiss Superspeed CinePrimes/Uncompressed capture (apple pro-res) combination. Hopefully I can post some of the footage so you can see what the camera is capable of with this open versatility.

You're Wonderful! I haven't been able to find many users online (as compared to HVX owners) hmmm..... Maybe the Canon people are too busy working? oe maybe they don't need to learn anything? or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place???
Just kidding. The HVX support network is PRICELESS but the Canon footage I've seen is also PRICELESS!
Can't wait to see your footage. I have a HVX and I'm paying on a Canon. I've been debating if I should sell the HVX in order to get the Canon out now. All input is appreciated. I'm mainly doing music video's and documentaries.
Thank you for the response. Hope all is wonderful

Well I can totally recommend the Canon XL H1. Really a superb camera. And capable of outputting a fairly significantly higher quality image than the HVX200 (although at more cost too).

But you will be giving up variable framerates with the HVX200. Does that factor in a lot to the type of shooting that you do?

I visited your website last night and have to give you MAJOR KUDOS for a Great Reel.
I wish I could afford to keep both camera's but since I'm not planning on doing work for hire I think the Canon is the Winner here. I do love the variable framerate though.

Thanks again. You're definitely a Super Pro and your work speaks for itself.
Only love,
T
