I need help capturing from the P2 to Final Cut??????

LOL. Glad thats working for you now, also be sure to keep checking your software updates , because FCP 5.1.2 is coming very soon with a few new features in the P2 mode, like logging and and cutting the clips and being able to watch them before you convert them to quicktime files.

Ya, it was prett dismal, worse then the Niners, the niners looked like a superbowl dynasty compared to us. But its only week one, i know its gunna suck for the whole season, but i gotta stay optimistic. Atleast my A's are on pace. Just hope they dont turn to Chokeland A's if we make the playoffs

Im stepping outside for a second to smoke, brb.

No Problem barry, i serously and thoughorly enjoy helping people. Its what i tried to do on the G'faqs boards, but it is full of trolls and others of the like.

But yes, my goal coming here was to absorb as much as i could, learn in the process and hopfully in turn use all the knowledge ive gain, as well as my own knowledge and somewhat biased opinion towards Apple :) and spread the knowledge, usually my goal on any message board.

Nice to hear coming from you Barry, but this is the status quo for me :) when i get the chance that is.

Hey Cynic, you seem to be a knowledgable Oakland fan. I hope you will still answer my questions if I'm a Niners fan. Heh.

I just got my new HVX-200 today. I had a heck of a time just figuring out how to playback the thumbnails off the LCD because I wasn't familiar with the button layout. Figured that out...kind of. I still don't know why I can't play back 24p and just 24pn clips. So I popped my P2 card out of the cam, into my Powerbook PCMCIA slot after installing the software, it loaded up beautifully.

Opened up FCP 5.1, Import to P2 looks great. I import the clip and now it is saying I have to render a 30 second file for 14 minutes. Is this completely necessary to do? Is there any way to import clips without rendering them? I thought I'd be able to load the clips and start editing right away. At least that was the impression that I got from the whole P2 format.

Thanks, and hope your Raiders do a little better this weekend. Didn't help that they were shutout on Monday Night Football. Don't feel too bad, Green Bay and Tampa Bay also got blanked.

As knowledgable as i can be, both A's and Raiders, but i am a Niner fan, always have been , always will be. Theres no reason not to like the Niners, especially being born and raised in the bay area, South San Francisco to be specific. But i dont like the niners decisions, and since debartalo was forced to leave the ownership of the team, its been downhill. I personally hope they lose every single game as long as Alex Smith is starting at QB, already having Ken Dorsey, a high draft pick and learning the system, and then being able to get Trent Dilfer (who has to ride the bench to an over paid rookie, even though Dilfer is wearing a SUPERBOWL RING!) all the losses they get are deserved for the decisions they are making.

Anyways, your problem....

You dont have to render if the TIMELINE where you drop the clip matches the CLIP SETTINGS (meaning that if the clip was shot in 720p 24p / or 720pN 24p the time line needs to also be 720p 24p.

The resolution and frame rate of the time line needs to match what you shot the clips in. Thats how it works for all of them. And the same goes for the HVX. The HVX has to be in the same RECORDING MODE as to what the clips were shot in in order to play them back in the viewer, i know thats dumb, but thats how the HVX is.

So to setup the timeline to match your clips, find out what you shot the clips in, (thats the easy part beause you know already, and if you dont, you can right click them in the Bin window and get info on the clip)

Now you can change the settings of a time line by right clicking on that and hitting settings, then just simply use one of the EASY SETUPS, load that up to match what the clips were shot in. Sorry took a while for a response, i was watching 40 year old virgin for the first time. :P ironic

Playback of clips recorded differently only can occur when you set the camera to the exact settings that the clips were recorded in.

ie. to play back 720/24pn, set the cam to that. If you recorded clips with different settings on the same card, then you have to change to cam settings to match those to enable their playback.

According to the manual , operation is not guaranteed when hooking the HVX to a MAC via USB. You should use FW and 1394 device setting. Does it work using usb?

Cool! So now that the video clips are playing back natively in the timeline, now the audio is driving me crazy. I tried to import a song to use but it says that is unrendered as well. Can you convert stuff upon import so that it is ready to go? Or does it have to render that crap as well? I basically do not want to spend any time rendering unless it is for an effect or transition. I will definitely do all of the core audio editing in Pro Tools, being that I am a sound editor. But in FCP, I think I would go nuts if I had to render every clip that I import into the temp cut.

So if you are shooting in 24pn and you have a double system audio recorder going in parallel, what framerate would you use in Pro Tools to match the picture? 23.98 or 23.976? Or just 24?

Thanks, oh yeah, Ken Dorsey got traded in the pre-season.

Ya, i know, which is bogus for ken dorsey to be traded, but i hope he kills the niners when they play em.

OZDUC, all of the people i know personally that have an HVX and a Mac have had 100% success rate using the USB DEVICE mode to mount the P2 from the camera. I dont know why it is insisted upon that this doesnt work. On intel based Macs specifically, USB is the extremely stable and Firewire sometimes has issues mounting the card. I think the driver for the P2 on the Mac is not Universal Binary so its causing probs that way.

Also on Power PC Macs , the issue pops up. ANother thing was firewire ports on the HVX shorting out when using the firewire cable , you kind of have to jump through a hoop or two to be safe and secure that you wont short the port out. Barry let me know this.

KGB: as far as the audio, i have no idea why its doing that, i can drop Mp3s, aiffs, wavs and etc into any timeline no matter what the speed. 29.97, 24, 23.98 and not have to render to listen to it, unless i end up with like 5 mp3's on top of eachother. Are you using AIFs? you should try that if you arent since FCP reads those 100x better than anything else in my experience.

OZDUC: go try the USB Device mode , youll see it works perfectly, all you have to do is make sure the card is in write protect mode.

Could this be why the manual says to use the little ferrite core they supply for the FW cable?

I will try the USB, although normally I just load the P2 card into the slot on my G4 Powerbook. Seems like the quickest transfer.

Yes, that is the quickest on a Powerbook. I dont have one though, I got a Macbook Pro as my laptop.
