XL2 Audio 2 channel recording

Hello out there,

I just purchased an XL2 and love it. My question is; I am trying to record 2 separate channels of audio, one from the on-board camera mic and the other from an external shotgun mic. I have tried what I believe to be every conceivable switch position and still cannot get both to work simultaneously. I think I am missing something on the switch positioning but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I Believe Your Not Missing Anything. Dont Think Its Possible To Mix The On Camera Mic With The Xlr Inputs. Think You Would Have To Replace The On Board Mic With Another One With Xlr Connectors And Pipe It Into The Rear Of The Cam. Canon Does Offer An On Cam Mic Adaptor Which Could Help. We Need To Hear From Our Audio Experts On This One, Im Filming A Wedding In May And Would Like To Use Several Lav Mics And The On Cam Mic For Ambience.

Hello to Both,

Sundance, I have two shotgun mic's and have tried both and still can't get the switch configuration. I am an old betacamSP shooter and I just assume from my experience with them that if the cam has two independent ch of audio then you can record the tracks independently from two separate sources. The XL2 has four channels!... I hope I'm just missing something.

Audio....

Audio....

Ok.. I'm going to try and do this from memory because I had the same problem and had to contact Canon Directly and work with a tech on the phone.

You have to go into your menu and select your audio options
Change it from 16 bit audio to 12 bit audio
This enables your rear mic mounts

Make sure you know that if you have a mic with power, your +48v is off for the channel(s)

I can't remember if ATT needs to be on or off for channels 1\3 or 2\4 I think you want to use 2/4 to plug in your mic so you can still use the camera mic which is ALWAYS channel 1.

Once you have the mics plugged in, there is an audio button on the side of your camera called audio monitor. You need to push that a few times unil you can see it go into the right mode before you'll hear crap from the 2nd mic.

You also have to choose your channel behind your audio door to adjust and enable the mic 2/4.

It can be tricky because there are about 5 steps you have to do and you think you're hearing from mic 2/4 but many times you'll be getting sound through the mount. You really need to plug in headphones and not trust your audio meters except on your wheel display.

If all else fails, I would HIGHLY recommend contacting Canon tech support and having them walk you through this. I hope this helps!
