New panasonic HD camera three 1/3 inch chips, "the new DVX"

So is it true that this camera has "new" 1/3 CCD's? What about the lowlight ability of this new cam? Will it be equivalent to at least the DVX100B or will it be in the dark & noisy HVX range?

We only know what the press release says. The press release does not say "new" CCDs. The Crave article did, I think, and I believe the author said that he'd participated in a conference call? So if that report is to be believed then yes they're new, but that information is not confirmed in the press release.

We have no information on low light ability or noise or anything like that. If it's using the exact same chipset from the HVX200 I would expect the exact same performance. If it's using "new" chips, I would expect improvements in that performance.

I wonder how long it will be until we see an AVC-HD XL-H2/XH-A2 with similar abilities? At NAB2008? What about Sony?

Hopefully the competition will heat up this year giving us all some great camera choices.

I know for a fact canon has something in the wings.

I don't think sony will hit flash only year given the sheer amount of cameras they're already announced (hd1000, ex1, z7, s270). The Z7 and the S270 are both considered a step above this market, more hvx territory but there's always room for surprises I guess. What'd be interesting would be what a flash only sony would use because it's CF cards in the other two and sony is always trying to push that friggin memorystick format.

I forgot ALL about Canon. It's been a little while and they haven't shown their own AVC-HD products.

NAB please. =D If I can make it I'm taking my letus and a few different sized rings. Maybe I can steal some 35mm Footage from the floor.

Don't expect any new products from Canon at NAB, that's not really their show. They devote their booth more to broadcast lenses. Canon usually makes announcements at other shows. Of course, they might surprise us, but don't be disappointed if you don't see anything new there, it's just not their style to introduce camcorders at NAB.

Hi Folks,

Have not read all the way through this as I have way too much to do this am. Barry asked me to step in and clarify what this camera is. If you think of AVCHD as the new DV then this camera (the 150) is the new DVX100. It has 24P, it is economically priced, right where long GOP recording should be. But it is a very nice camera and it records to SD cards, just like all AVCHD cameras do.

Is it the replacement for the HVXX200, clearly no. It does not do 24P in DVCPRO HD. It doesn't do variable frame rates, it does not have P2.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Thanks, Jan. That's all that was needed. Hope this puts HVX users fears to rest (it did to me). Now do bring a successor to the HVX as soon as possible! Please do give us something with much Shallow DOF. I ask of you, I beg of you ! :)

Does anyone know if Panasonic will be showing a working model at NAB?

Can someone please tell me how many 1080/24p minutes you can fit on a 32GB SDHC memory card at the highest quality 20- 24Mbps rates?

Thank you.

No idea, but I wouldn't be surprised if what they show isn't working yet. The DVX was announced at NAB 2002 but not shown as a working sample, and the HVX was announced at NAB 2005 but not shown as working.

Well, there will surely be different model numbers; we can look to the HPX500 for an example there. It's the HPX500 in north America, the HPX502 in southeast Asia and Europe, and the HPX555 in Japan. So I would expect similar territory differentiation with this new unit. However, I believe the 500/502/555 is all the same physical product, just different model numbers to denote the territories where it's sold and where warranty coverage applies. So presumably the HMC150 would follow a similar pattern.

In other words, buy it in your territory and you'll have a warranty; gray-market it from somewhere else and you won't have a warranty.

with previous cameras that are a different product for the pal/ntsc countries, the pal version often seems a bit overpriced (after doing the US-AUD dollar conversion and comparing the rrp) i always thought this was due to the fact that they have to create a new product for us pal land countries that they charge us extra as a kind of punishment for not using ntsc.

in short, do you reckon seeing as they only have to make one physical version of the camera, the pal rrp will translate smoothly from the US rrp?

how much do you guys think this cam will cost?
i read one news article on it where the writer guessed at $6000! he must have thought it was the hvx replacement or something.

No, I don´t think so. With the strong euro recently the pricing for cameras in europe became more reasonable. Though gear is still cheaper in dollarland.

this camera doesn't have variable frame rates but it does have 720/60p (among other formats) if you threw footage shot in 720/60p into a 24p timeline would that allow you the same slow motion effect as the hvx? or would it be more in line with the technique of shooting 60i on the dvx and doing that special something to it?

Yes, if you put 720/60p in your NLE and slowed it to 40% speed it should deliver exactly the same slow-mo effect as the HVX accomplishes when shooting at 60fps. It wouldn't match what an HVX can do at 36fps or 18fps or any of its other variable frame rates.
