The Ornament (XHA1 + M2)

I like i like, i can only hope i could get that out of my new setup, now for the question that always must be asked: what lens did you use?

Hey Marlon, congrats on the new film, just a few things I'd like to point out.

Lighting- This scene was very flat, it definitely could've used some warmth, and maybe an edge light or two. The whole time I felt very "cold" watching it. Almost as if the characters were uncomfortable, just because of the color palette.

Composition- For the most part this was fine, but you had a section of dialogue in the middle where you were cutting between a MCU OTS to an ISO MCU. This felt wierd because in the practice of cinematography, you generally want to cut between matching shots, otherwise it can become distracting, unless that is the effect you are going for, though here it didn't seem like it. I kept wanting you to cut from his OTS of her, to the OTS of him, which you did use here and there, but I am guessing it is cut the way it is because of performance. In this case, the compositional importance takes a backseat.

Color Timing- I am guessing this scene isn't done, but it could really use from a little crushing of the blacks, and bringing the whites out a little. The color temp you choose is a part of your creative decision, but something warm felt appropriate.

Best of luck with the rest of the film, looking good!

1. Good! It's suppose to be "cold" and "uncomfortable". The scene is about ex-lovers seeing each other for the first after 3 years. They are supposed to be awkward and uncomfortable with each other except for that brief moment in the middle of the scene.

2. Like you said, certain cuts that were made were due to performance.

3. the black are pretty crushed, h.264 codec tends to destroy that.

Footage looks good. Nicely done. I'll be keeping an eye on this to followup for future updates.

Looking forward to seeing the finished product,

Kegan

Agreed. (Although I could have worded it quite as well as Andrew just did) When you cut back & forth between those different lengths, something doesn't seem right. His sightline seems to be off or something on his medium shots. (Compared to her OTS shot, which seems fine)

BUT, overall, looks good, and the scene itself kept my interest. I liked the dolly shot from the kitchen into the dining room. Keep posting updates, I love to see A1 footage.

EDIT: "couldn't have worded it"

Marlon in another thread am I correct in remembering you used the M2 SD kit and not the HD kit on your M2? Does that change anything?

edit: I saw the bts shots off your blog. You use a monitor through composite to monitor your shots? You can't focus off that.

i use the one mounted on the camera for framing... i also have an 24" lcd for focusing

my problem with your rough scenes, is that i dnt think you properly establish the geography of the scene, if that makes any sense. yes, you can see that they r talkin to each thru the eyelines and all, but u dnt really see where in the room they are. i think u need some master shots of the whole room so we can properly establish their locations. i think the actress in the scene 10 is really pretty. but i gotta say, you are one of the A1 users i respect the most, second only to mcgregor, junipero and last son of celeste are very good shorts.
