"I ****ING HATE YOU" – a film by SABI

That was different. I really liked the story and the script. Well executed. Loved the “lovey, lovey, love, love” part of the song, and the expressions! The actors rocked with this!
I wasn’t sure I was going to like the handheld style and shifting focus stuff ya had going on, but in the end it kinda worked for me. The framing was well done.
To be honest, from the title I went in with low expectations and left extremely surprised. After thinking about it, better to go with a strong title like yours so viewers aren’t taken too off guard! Really nice film! Thanks for sharing!

kurtmo, thanks for the comments. glad you liked the story, but actually... there was no script. Marion and John improvised every word and action beginning to end based on "objectives" for the scene. only the song was "premeditated". thanks again!

all praise for the compositions goes to the cinematographers -- Matt Garrett and Addison Brock.

This is a very, very slick and contemporary film.

Its starts out as a non-film (hear me out).... but as you said about hacking off the first 3 minutes, when the situation starts to play out, especially as he picks up the guitar, our minds start to fill in the subtext. Perfect.

You made all the right decisions in IFHY. Colors, actors, editing... Inspirational.
thanks, DJ. thanks for allowing yourself to fill in the gaps. that really is the intent of this one... so that people (audience and filmmakers alike) can hang their own experiences on these characters, and maybe think about themselves a little.

...of which the latter one is a cool pseudonym

I won't vote for myself, (I wouldn't know which of the films to vote for anyway) so you definitely have my vote for this fest. The song should've been improvised too

Wow, interesting. Probably the most realistic feeling of all the shorts I've seen in this fest so far. Though I didn't like the random focus buzzing.

The story was working for me until there was no payoff. You gotta go somewhere with that. The story made me feel very awkward, which was cool, but I would have loved it to have had an ending.

My first impression was that she was there for the first time on a date and the guy was kinetically nervous. Very cinematic. I like the camera movement. Makes the moment very intimate, like you’re a fly on wall. Its seems that you consciously framed the guy on the right and the girl on the left which kept me oriented throughout. My favorite shot is at about TC 5:03.

The acting was very strong. Just the subtle facial expressions conveyed a lot. The girl’s limited dialog and excellent acting was a plus! Great job to your actors. My favorite line or acting is when he pops out from the room with the cell phone camera, ‘Say cheese’. It’s kind of mischievous and fun and creates a good contrast to the emotion of the song near the end.

I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help but think of Adam Sandler in the ‘Wedding Singer’ when he wrote a song about his ex-girlfriend and performed it for the Drew Barrymore character.

I was engaged the entire time, trying to figure out what was going on and when it was finally revealed (or as I figured it out) the payoff completed the story for me. Thanks.

I didn’t like the title. Almost felt that it was done for ‘shock’ value, but you did a great job telling the story and conveying what you set out to do. Oddly enough, this is in my top 12 for what you accomplished in this project technically and in the acting.

nice. it felt very real.

a few questions. what was your lighting setup like? did you have trouble getting enough light for the HV20s? what aperture did you shoot at?

and just to satisfy my curiosity even more.... did the camera facing the girl have the brevis and the guy the sgpro?

The lighting set up was two cfl's and a window.
From what I remember the hv20's seem to gain up a little bit inside.
We shot wide open inside.
The sgpro had a nikon 85mm 1.8 and the brevis had a 105mm 2.5

One camera did not stay on one person the whole time.
We mixed and matched.
There are some parts I can pick out which footage is which but overall I think it matches.

thanks matt. yeah, i just watched it again. it does switch around a bit. it's cut so quick that it's hard to tell. it seems the brevis stuff is more grainy...

CLF's? i'm not familiar with the terminology. i assume it's "compact fluorescent light". those regular household energy saver flouro globes?
what sort of wattage are we talking about?

yeah, i added grain in post. the "yellow" CFL was an 85w 2700K and the blue (which we balanced for) was a dual 24" 5500K. i don't remember the wattage.

Robert, thanks for taking the time to post. you're very kind. i truly appreciate you taking the time.

yeah, what are you gonna do? when you pursue an authentic sense of realism, you have to hold back (in my opinion) on plot devices like "payoffs", or you sort of blow the illusion. i know minimalism isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I'm one of those douchebags that finds great significance in the little things... the subtle turns of character, the gentle understandings, the winks and the nods of life... rather than the overt revelations and declarations. thanks for your comments shawn!!!! and for adding to the discussion -- you rock!
