HD DVD Format War Over! Blu-Ray Wins. [Officially - press release inside]

wow im glad i havent bought into the hype of either system yet. If HD dvd does die i feel bad for those that have invested the loot. I dont even own a hdtv yet :)

good, it had to come to an end.. although, i wish bluray had more storage than 25 gb... where are 50 gb discs :(

Not official, they said may cease production. Remeber HD DVD is about .06 cheaper per GB. Many manufactures are coming out with dual players and burners. No Doubt Blu Ray has a shot in the arm, but I say its still a long way from over.

Plus I hope it's not over. Options are always good for the consumer. If Bluray becomes the one and only (like sony would have us believe) then they get expensive. On the other hand if there is competition prices stay lower. Besides there is still a divide in the blu ray camps. All the specs were never agreed to. So sony will pull there typical propritary stunt and isolate themselves from the larger market. And you'll end up with two flavors of blu ray. JM2C

I don't think it is so much people celebrating fewer choices, I think it's the fact that now people can buy with more assurance that the player and movies they buy will not be obsolete any time soon. With both formats out many people are apprehensive about buying into one or the other. Now that there is only one format, like DVD, I think more people will be getting into an HD format.
Not that I am a sony supporter, hell, now I have to figure out what to do with the HD DVD's that I have purchased, and wonder if they become available now for Blue-Ray.

I don't think it's celebrating fewer choices I think it's because everyone was sitting on the fence because they didn't want to invest in two formats.

I still think it's supply and demand. If the price is to high, people won't buy. Sony will either have to adjust or Blu-Ray will die.

I'm doing just fine with my standard def DVD player. When the price drops, I'll buy.

If not, then I'll do without.

I think BlueRay is a stupid name...

I agree. From a marketing standpoint to consumers BlueRay is a terrible name. I understand it refers to how the technology works but I thought HD DVD was a much better product name.

Exactly. The average person knows what "HD" stands for.

Personally, I'm sticking with SD DVDs until they're no longer made (should be a very long time).

I bought an HD DVD player for $150, money well spent as far as I'm concerned. When blu-ray players get even close to that pricepoint, I'll buy one. But my HD DVD player and DVDs are not obsolete. Why would they be when I'll always be able to watch them and get the same experience as with Blu-ray? I'm not sure how well the blu-ray players upconvert, but my Toshiba HD player is the best DVD player I've ever owned. Miles better than the highly praised Oppo upconverting player which I owned previously. Toshiba makes great players, period.

I'm with David. I wish that HD DVD had stuck around a little longer. Competition is always a good thing and I'm not thrilled to see how Sony et al abuse their newfound format monopoly. You still can't get a blu-ray player for less than $400, which is really lame.
