There's something to be said about last minute entries. I, for one, have a very hard time deciding on a short story to tackle. Just deciding on the first one usually results in a few rewrites and "this is too expensive" or "just doesn't do it for me."

Geoff Reisner's entry is amazing and it's pretty much last minute, 48hr. Hard to do, but sometimes it results in really good work.

I have only competed in 72 hour fest but I would love to give a 48 fest a try sometime.

I lived in Italy when I entered a 72 hour fest. I was taking a month off to backpack Europe, 12 hours before the fest started I was in Spain so I caught a train back home for the weekend. 72 sleepless hours later I submit my project and got back on the first night train I could find and woke up not knowing what country I was in.

The trouble with a 48 or 72-hour format is that working people might not have absolute control over their schedules.

Having four fests over the year gives filmmakers time to develop their work around the parts of their schedule that can't be changed.
