Is there a small panny camera that could be used to intercut with HVX ?

A company that I'm working with wants to buy a camera that could cut decently with the HVX200 720p/n. Something smaller that would work well when shooting verite' incognito or b-roll.

thanks :)

what about this camera:

Panasonic AG-HSC1U

AVCHD

Capture footage as 720P via convergent design HDMI to HDSDI . ?

That little camera is designed to match the color and gamma of the other Panasonic cameras; only real problem is that it's 1080i-only. No 24p or 25p or anything like that.

Press releases are hitting about all sorts of new products (including a new high-def DVX!) but no news about a new little micro-cam yet.

The press releases are showing up in places like Creative Cow's and 2-pop's news feeds, and I'm sure Jason Ramsey will be posting them. Someone posted a link to one of the press releases on StudioDaily. They e-mailed them to me, I could post the text of them in a new "panasonic press releases" section in DVXUser news, I guess. Let me go do that...

what about this camera: Panasonic AG-HSC1U AVCHD?

Actually it's a pretty cool little (1.1 lb) pocket cam.

It comes with (or was a download from the Panasonic site, can't remember) a utility from Main Concept that converts the AVC-HD to DVCPROHD.
I just pop those into Edius Broadcast and away I go.

B&H seems to have the market with this cam--I bought a kit that came with an extra battery, 4 SD cards, a filter and a nice bag. Funny being able to record 40 minutes to a 4gig SD card in the highest resolution. Also comes with its own P2Store-like drive (40 gigs), holds about 400 minutes.

I'm not recommending this as your "A" camera as it's by no means a replacement for the HVX200 but you could get away with intercutting some shots with it . . .

Best features: Small, HD, solid state.

Takes a little getting used to shooting without an eyepiece (LCD only), especially in bright sunlight. I use it mostly in places where I wouldn't (from past experience . . . sand in the focus ring) want to take my HVX200. Perfect companion to have in the car -- never know what you're going to roll up on.

Best.

The HVX-200 IS the small camera. The Varicam is the BIG camera, and the HVX-200 is the smaller B-Camera option. Also the smaller option to the HPX-3000, 2000 and 500.

Canon HD consumer cameras make amazing images, but before you buy one of them you should research the scrolling shutter issue and the compatibility with your specific NLE:

The scrolling shutter in 24P makes it impossible to capture fast moving objects in 24P. They will warp and look like they are made of Jell-O.

The Cameras use the DV codec @ 1440 x 1080. Some NLEs will injest this no problem while a few others will not. Canon also has a different pulldown technique for 24P over 60i, and you may have to pre-process before ingest.

As far as color, you should be doing color correction anyway, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just shoot some charts and find the settings that match the closest between the cameras.

I was thinking of using the convergent design box to go from HDMI to HD-SDI and down convert the 1080i signal to a 720P signal via Kona 3.
Seems like a lot is happening there.... so I don't know how great the image would look.

It would end up being DVCPRO 720p with the same color and gamma as other panny cameras. Might work?

yes I know the HVX was designed to be the baby to the Varicam. I'm looking for the baby baby.

I might get that cam in the next few weeks to months. I'll post some samples if I do purchase it.

I may also......................... just need to scope out the editing issues. I'm using Premiere CS3 and will have to use another program to convert the AVCHD files. :embarasse

There are no editing issues . . . if you can edit DVCPRO HD then you're in good shape. Main Concept has a utility that converts AVCHD files to DVCPROHD (comes free with the Panasonic AG-HSC1U). I'm sure there will be other choices in the utility category real soon.

best.

I got the HV20 and it's a great baby baby camera for the money. You have to have a ton of light though.. but when you do, man it cuts nicely. You have to deal with the saturation and do a bit of CC but works really nicely. I'll post some intercutting I did at a concert... When it's well lit then it's sweet.. when it's low key then it's grainy. THe camera is only rated at like 80asa so it's a pig for light.

I saw a lot of saturation using a HG10 AVCHD cam as well. Also, strobing on 1080/24p.

Finally returned the cam.

Interested to see yours

I saw this camera today in Miami at the media summit. Looks awesome and is perfect for shooting in tight spaces like on a dashboard of a car. Camera comes with a 40 gb hard drive witch holds 320 minutes of footage. Also a new HVX is supposed to launch later in the year with no DV Tape deck and I heard it will come with a 5 year warranty since there wont be any moving parts.
