CARRY-ON - A Caffesse/Wildman Film

Glad you got in, Luis. I'm so surprised this is your first fest. You're such a popular and funny guy. I agree completely with everything you said about the fest. Just wait, it gets better. I can't tell you how much I learned about filmmaking from the last fest. It really upped my IQ on some things and hopefully this one will too. This is such a cool place and the mods. are off the freakin' chain.

I had to kick in and agree with everything the furry one has said.

Especially that Drew makes me feel old. He was telling us that he hasn't seen Gangs of New York yet, and that he was 10 when it came out. Wow, that stung.

Besides that, Drew was one of the best crew I've worked with on a shoot. Thanks again!

That goes for all the others that Luis mentioned and some that were not (bc they don't come here really...)

What I'd like to add here is that we found out a lot about ourselves in this process. We have competed in 48 hour film festivals before and the 'post-mortem' is always difficult. It goes by so fast you have to forgive frayed nerves, forgotten lines, etc. Self-evaluation inside those confines is difficult if not irrelevant.

On the flip side if you have a wide open schedule things can drag on forever. I know we have more than one piece that just got shelved for one reason or another.

This fest is the best boot camp I have experienced. We learned a lot - from the actors, from the crew, from those who supported us, and especially for those that critiqued us (especially the painful ones!)

If you want to really learn where you're at as filmmaker, keep entering these fests. It is the perfect length to get something together that can be really good, but puts you inside a tight enough box (mainly length and deadline) that you'll finish with something that you might not find perfect, but awesome within the context which you made it. Even if it's not awesome you'll find yourself learning a lot about yourself as a filmmaker, which can only make the next project better.

That's my post for this month (maybe quarter or year), but really had to throw my extra nickel at the conversation. thanks to everyone who has posted in the thread. i can't wait to see everyone's entries!

whatever, dude. everyone knows you're only in it for the Vance jib.

:D

seriously though. . .i'm glad it's over.

maybe my husband can go to sleep earlier than 4am.

Thanks a lot Luis and Cliff.

The shoot was fun and I learned quite a lot too (even though Luis kept apologizing because he didn't think the set was "cool" enough).

Hey Luis, glad you got your project uploaded that night. It was crazy, huh?

I have to third, or fourth, or errr.... whatever, I agree with your reflection on the fest. I learned alot this last month, and I will definitely be entering more of these. Not to mention I had alot of fun. Well, at some points it didnt seem like fun (last 3 hours of production) but as you say, having a second to stop and think about it, it was a fun, learning experience.

Good luck man. Love your screen grabs and your location.

Hey Luis, I just finished Carry-On. Nice work!

The cinematography was very good! Your framing, camera work and colors were simple but very pleasing to the eye. I love that I got to see an entry from you because you're one of the most prolific posters on the board and now I have a piece of filmmaking, a visual style to attribute to you. (Until you mix it up and go all Cloverfield on us in the next one :)) It's very clean, simple, conservative. Good stuff.

All of the actors did a great job with (somewhat) tricky material. Your female lead was giving me a strong Mary Steenburgen vibe. I really enjoyed her performance.

The story was interesting. I think you did a great job picking out a small pivotal piece of their relationship story. It fit well in the time allotted. I liked how you started the moment after she'd dropped the "bombshell." It was nicely revealed later on, too.

Oh, and your sound was top-notch. You are obviously an experienced video production pro. There really weren't any technical flaws, that I noticed anyway. Which let me concentrate almost 100% on the story and characters.

I had a couple small problems with the short, and obviously these are 100% subjective...Just thought I'd throw 'em out there.

I know I said I liked the look, and I really did, but thematically, it seemed too bright and cheery for the piece. Just a bit. The bookstore shots were awesome, very colorful, but it kept me waiting for a sitcom/quirky humorous pay-off. I was undecided as to the "genre" for just a hair too long.

(Very minor quibble....when she says "People are looking at us" It SO would have helped to have had at least one visible human in the background, looking at them or not. :))

Perhaps also minor, but the progression of time seemed a little strange. They're having coffee in broad dayight, but she says let's go the bookstore, and then it's nighttime.

I thought there was a little bit of a story/character/dialogue issue. Basically, when things start to fall apart, their characters unraveled a little...oddly. Inconsistently, I think.

He says "So am I [sorry]" (3:40) For what? And why does she seem so hurt by this - with her shocked/accusing reaction (She didn't flinch when he threw the watch at her and started swearing)?

Then he acts hurt when she swears at him and says "You don't mean that." (4:07) Why?

Maybe I'm overanalyzing it but the beats here seemed a little off. Kind of a lousy critique because I don't know how you'd "make it better." But it's a spot where the characters weren't as believable for me.

Anyways, nice work and I can't wait to see the next Caffesse entry...

Yeah, that sounds like me.
Of course nothing could possibly make me sound less cool than that post.
Thanks, Drew.
:)

I'll clarify:

Luis probably said something more along the lines of, "Sorry that the lighting set-up isn't exciting enough."

p.s. I think you're cool.

Haha.
Thanks, Drew.

And Jared - thanks for taking the time to write detailed feedback like that. I really appreciate it.
I'd gladly answer the quesitons you posed - but I'd rather wait for some other reactions to come in (and I'm not certain if you were actually looking for answers, or asking rhetorically).
:)

Good writing, good acting, good cinematography, strong direction, emotional story that never gets into melodrama.

Hmm, yeah Luis, you should be totally embarrassed about this. Jeeze...Next time just fess up to how good you are and avoid the drama. Please?

Hey Luis, Great Job!

Wow, you have some really great stuff here!

I loved the performances and the overall cinematography of this film. The colors with bright, crisp and well balanced.

The camera work was well executed. A few comments... I felt that I wanted to see the watch be tossed and hit the pavement. I didn't like "holding" on the waist of the actors (and watch) in the store during the crane up shot. Just felt like I wanted that to be a smooth catch-it-and-go shot. Felt like we held there. And I loved the dolly back shot in house! Nice!

I thought that the story went around the bush a few too many times without offering anything new.... except for that ending! Whoa!

Great Job! Again, great performances. I loved the woman!

Congrats,

Ted

i hope you're proud of what you accomplished here, Luis. this is one of the most consistent and "pro" pieces i've watched so far. my girlfriend, like others here, marveled at how your colors really popped off the screen.

Wow - thanks for all the kind words and feedback so far guys.
Coming from this group, it means a hell of a lot.

I just wanted to pop on here to give credit where credit is due - while I'm the one that posts on here all the time, and the person that you guys know - this film is definitely a joint effort with my producing/directing partner Cliff Wildman. So the alcolades to go him as much as they do to me.....

....but all the bad stuff is his fault.
:)

Okay, so you do suck. Got it.

Just got done watching, Luis. Loved it. I kept guessing in my head what it was that she said to piss him off, thinking about all the things that it could have been, and the obvious answer was right in front of me, and I didn't see it . Good job. I thought that was well crafted. I honestly didn't see the ending coming, but I liked it.

Luis,

First off, I REALLY thought the acting/direction on this was way up there. To be honest, I don't even know who directed it, but if it was you, great job. What I liked best was the fact that on the second view, the characters really stayed true to their circumstances. It would be easy to try and mislead as much as possible and not explore the unease of the characters, only to try and make the end really stand out. I really think this would have taken ALOT away from the story.

Straight away, both character's discomfort is REALLY playing well IMO. As it goes on, things seem to only get worse as the woman tries to address every issue except the important one. I may be rambling here, but I'm just typing as I think....Not always a good thing.

My favorite part was outside of the bookstore when the get in their argument. I think of all the scenes, this was the least polished cinematography-wise, but the acting was f*ckin dope. "Now we're taking a tri.....No! We're not taking a trip..." Loved that line. The guy was solid.

One of the few shorts I watched twice, but more importantly, one of the few shorts I liked even more on the second preview.

Production values, acting, direction, all were great.

My only two gripes: The actual look of the adapter. The DOF seemed (I know I'll be shot here) a tad too shallow. Almost looked Composited at times. Most people will want to hang me there. The second is the husband's line about the movies. It sounded weird to me as he looked genuinely happy to see her (insinuating a really good marriage) and also because it threw me off that she went to a movie without him.

Hope this wasn't too much of a rant.

Tim.

Wow. I've only watched this and Forsman's so far but, man, the acting in this fest has been kicked up about a BILLION notches. Great simple setups. A little crane but only when you need it. And I love going to handheld outside. Wow. Awesome writing too. And she it hot! Like Michelle Pfeiffer.
