Why use an aquisition card?

Why should I use an aquisition card like a Kona Card, when i can use my imac and transfer my stuff (1080p) with my firewire cable ?!

the advantage of the kona card or blackmagic is that they let you ingest your footage in an uncompressed format in 10bit. but thats mostly for higher end tape camera based workflow when you use an HD deck of somesort. shooting with the hvx the footage is compressed to the dvcproHD codec so transfering it with one of those cards wouldn't make much if any of a difference.

But if you want to output to HD tape, something NOT DVCPRO HD, like HDCAM, D5, HDCAM SR, then you need the card. But none of those work on an iMac. Well, the AJA I/O HD will, but that is overkill. The Matrox MXO is good for this. And if you want to see the actual HD image with full quality color, you need a capture card and HD monitor.
