I believe this is a very relevant question following the recent flow of Cmos based Professional cameras, like the RED ONE and The Sony EX1. I would really like to see what everyone's position is on this- and maybe give a "hint" to the Panasonic insiders around of what we want :)

So, what do you think?

Option 4 for me with 1440x1080 CCD's, but this is too optimistic. 1280x720 pixel shifted 2/3 would be enough for me... How about you guys?

There's no way you could get a 3 x 2/3" CCD chip into the current body. That's exactly what the HPX500 is anyway; and they're not going to make a camera that competes with their own camera. I see a 3 x 1/2" 720 CCD with pixel shifting for 1080. CCD just produces a better image (look at Dalsa Origin/Evolution, best camera available.).

Having seen the HPX's interior, posted by a fellow user, I still think a 2/3ccd option is possible. Of course it would mean a bigger lens to cope with the CCD's, but in a fixed lens design body, i believe that something by the size of an HVX or marginaly bigger is possible. This, however, couldn't compromise the handheld design. Difficult to do? Yes. Impossible? I wouldn't think so.

The main challenge should be to maintain the weight of the body of the current model, or just a little bit heavier, but bellow 6 to 7kg, to allow for HVX compatible support gear to be used (Steadicams, tripods, dollys, etc.)

EDIT- Anyway, if a 1/2 ccd design could produce Similar EX1 DOF, dinamic range and low light performance, I would definetly be happy.

CCD 2/3rds would definitely be better than 1/2 cmos!!!!!

First of all you are assuming someone is going to use the global shutter in a camera for the first time.

Second I am guessing price is not a factor, considering CMOS seems to be more cheap, but I perfer CCD's.

Third, wouldn't the dof be more shallow with 2/3 vs 1/2?

You're asking us to choose between alternatives that are clearly superior and others that are clearly inferior. e.g. the 4th which is clearly superior to the 3rd and the 2nd which is clearly superior to the first.

Of course we would choose the best and most expensive technology, so a poll like this means nothing unless a price is associated with each choice.

What, no write in category?

Anybody know why camcorders can't take advantage of Single CMOS chips as seen in D-SLRs ?

My "One Chip" Lumix makes darn colorful HD video :)

I've talked to some insiders at Panny and they say the updated HVX will shoot 35mm film, which will clearly end the CCD vs. CMOS debate.

They'll also be introducing a new video lens adapter that allows you to get that video look on film. No word on if they plan on introducing a rolling shutter adapter in the near future or not......

There's a very strong possibility Panasonic, following sony's "success"with the EX1, would go the CMOS route, due to cost/benefits.

I should've pointed out the economics on the poll, no doubt.

However, all the above designs would be financially viable at bellow 10k.

The first option, obviously, would go toe to toe with the EX. So we would be talking current HVX price point or bellow 6k.

And they will debut a new, energy-efficient method of powering the camera. I believe it's called a handcrank. (Actually, they're not the first to suggest this technology -- Jeff Kreines' Kinetta was supposed to offer it as an option.)

TBH I am so sick of post workarounds for anything. Your supposed to be shooting on a camera within a budget that doesnt make you spend extra $ because of XYZ, which costs you personal time or money. Im not bad mouthing any camera or anything in particular here. Just voicing my feeling. Thats just how I feel so if a camera manufacturer wants me to invest my time and $ in a camera it just has to be easy. I can take a compromise for example in SPZ's poll 2/3 " ccds at 1420x1080 pixel shifted to 1920x1080. That I can work with for anything. But, I go out and shoot and have a problem that screws the schedule or adds a day in post - makes me itchy. And I really believe that I am a pretty flexible person.

While there's space in the 500... I'm pretty sure space is extremely tight in the 200. Meaning the camera will have to get larger for 2/3" sensors. A 1/2" sensor is bigger than the current sensor but small enough to not really effect the size of the body at all.

I think that NAB will be interesting this year. The RED scarlet might help push things forward. Personally I'd love an update to the HVX.. especially in terms of the aweful LCD.. It's useless, and it would be nice to have the charger reconfigured.. and who knows what else. NAB should be FUN.. and Panny has been quiet...

I'm pretty sure they said they would NOT be taking reservations for scarlet, ever, and i doubt they'll have units ready to sell by then.

Maybe a prototype to show.

Oh okay. Maybe they'll just inform all reservation holders of RED ONE's before everyone else? Give them first crack?

I dunno. NAB just needs to hurry up. =\
