New Panasonic Drivers including Mac P2 format utility

Ok, just formatted a card in camera that I formatted and named with the new utility.
It went back to NO NAME after I formatted it in the camera. :(
So, it looks like the name only sticks if you don't format it in camera.

Off to see what happens using the P2 Store

What specifically is included in this "Upgrade" for PC Windows Users.?

I took a look at the sites and could not find that info ( and I hate changing drivers when I dont need to. If it aint broke....dont fix it).

Luckily (for me) PC users have both P2 Viewer and P2 Genie ( and the camera) for formatting cards. I have both Mac and PC

Also as an aside - On my Mac NLE I have no problems with P2 ( Adobe CS3 rocks!)

Well, good news and bad news.

Cards named with the new format utility keep their names when dumped to the P2 Store

Formatting the cards in the P2 Store has the same result as in the camera, they revert back to NO NAME

Well that's fantastic that they keep their name in the P2 Store!

Not surprised that camera formatting erases the name; it does the same to Windows, so no sweat there. Overall this looks like a nice little upgrade that can go a ways towards eliminating the "no name" nonsense.

Gah. After having a camera for two weeks, I feel naked. This FINALLY comes out and I can't play with it yet. Lordy.

I got back today...I had other work to do...

Little Problem with the Formatter and P2 Genie,

I am running Mac OS 10.4.11 on my G4 laptop and all still is working well except if I format a card with the formatter and change the name of the card, record to it and then protect it and bring it in using P2 Genie, it does not recognize the card.

Key word here is rename the card with the formatter.

Now if I reformat the card in the camera, bring it in using P2 Genie with the NO NAME tag it is regognized.

Then if I eject the card remove the rights protection and put it back in and use formatter to re-format the card it works as long as I do not change the name from the camera format no name.

I can work with this and am grateful for the formatter, but wanted to pass this on.

I stopped using P2 Genie after it said it was transferring my P2 card to a drive that I didn't even have plugged in. But, it still said everything was copying fine.

Not sure if Anders is going to work on a new version or not as I see it's still unavailable.

I use the P2 offload in HD Log Demo. It's free and it does a great job of offloading not only my P2 cards but my P2 Store as well.

Wish they'd make it part of P2 Log Pro.

Well, I just discovered that HD Log P2 Offload won't recognize the card unless it's formatted in the old NO NAME either. :(

Well, that really sucks. So, I guess unless you use P2CMS, which I really don't want to do you have to stick with the NO NAME.

Hopefully Imagine will come out with a new version that will address this.

Well, just a rookie here who's on a PC. Don't have insights on the new driver but did want to share something, in case it might help someone get their files organized. Hope it's OK. Maybe I'll post it somewhere else, if you guys think it is of any interest at all.

Have been filming for 3 weeks now, working on a short. I wanted to keep things simple but well organized and dint' want to deal with P2 viewer or the other software, so this is what I do:

1. film, using 2 P2 cards. one 16G and a brand new 32G ($1600 OUCH, I am still bleeding from every orifice!)

2. If running out of space during a shoot (no longer an issue now that I have the 32 gig) , downloaded to my laptop's harddrive, formatted and kept shooting.

3. Come home download footage onto PC.

4. Created a folder on hard drive named THE BENCH (short title)

5. inside folder created a folder for each scene (SCENE 1, SCENE2, etc..)

6. Say for ex I am filming Scene 1. When downloading footage filmed I place CONTENT and the LAST CLIP file inside the SCENE1 folder.

7. Open Vegas, open the VIDEO folder inside SCENE1 folder and import all the clips with Raylight into project.

8. Paste all of them in timeline, takes 1 sec. Save this project inside the same SCENE1 folder as "scene1 contents" this way I can see at a glance what I had filmed that day.

8. I then take a few screengrabs and save them as images in that same SCENE1 folder.

Now when I look at my THE BENCH folder and open it, I see my SCENE folders as large thumbnails and tiny pictures of the footage inside each folder , which helps me remember which scene is which.

Then I go edit, using the Scene1 contents project as a starting point and saving edits as "scene1 edit1 / edit2 etc..." as many times as I make editing changes.

Done deal. Everything is organized nicely and I don't worry about any other applications or anything, P2 viewer or anything else for that matter.

I do one last thing: Back everything up onto another drive, just in case.

Maybe this is a simplistic approach but it is working mighty nicely for me so far and I know where everything is and what everything is.

I just thought I'd share it here. For what it's worth.

Well my Duel Adapter now isn't recognised after this flurry of updates (did the P2 drivers and Duel Adapter for 10.4.11 aswell again), so I can't test the formatter.

I had the same problem with my Duel Adapter. I installed the latest P2 driver with Formatter against my better judgement but P2 CMS was crashing my mac on ingest so I felt I had to try it. Now I'm in the same boat and Macbook doesn't recognize P2 in my Duel Adaptor.

What have you done to fix that problem. Should I re-install the previous P2 driver? Let me know if you found a solution.

Thanks

Jim

I contacted Duel, and their support got back to me. Tried everything they suggested. Nada. So I've instructions to send back. Been abroad, so not possible, but will get down to that this next week. Thing is. UK to US and back is such a PITA.

Thanks for the quick response. I use to be an Online editor (CMX, Grass, Sony) and Promotion Producer and now I'm just getting back into business after 5 years. Everything about this is a PITA! I amazed at how much stuff just doesn't work.

I tried re installing an older P2 driver (1.3.0) - it kept saying there was nothing on the disk?

Then I re installed the deul adapter driver and it worked. I now have the lovable "no name" back and can drag and drop a P2 card.

I can also use P2 CMS to ingest one clip at a time but if I try sellecting multiple clips on a P2 and try ingesting them, my Macbook Pro screen darkens (freezes) and tells me to shut down by holding the power button for several seconds. ??

I don't really want to introduce more software to have to keep up with but I guess my next option is Raylight.

Thanks again and let me know what happens with yours.

Make sure your P2 card is write-protected. I had to assist someone in trying to install the Addonics adapter and it just absolutely wouldn't install the drivers until he write-protected the P2 card. I've heard similar stories about the Duel.

Barry, thanks to all the great information you provide, including your book, I do write protect immediately after I take it out of the HVX.

I actually installed P2 CMS and now am looking at Raylight because of your thead pointing out the problems with dragging and dropping P2 cards in the finder. That was working for me before but I understand that if I continue I will run into problems.

I don't see many other posts about my problem with P2 CMS so I have to assume It's something I've done. I am about to go through a whole list of house cleaning and optimizing chores on my mac and if nothing works I'll try wiping it out and starting over. It should be a good learning experience.

Thanks Jim
