Hi DVXers,

NOISE!!!!!!!!!

It shows up in the blacks! It can detrack from the footage and if your pulling a key it shows up in the foreground footage!!!!
So how do we get rid of it?

The answer!

We'll lets have a look at the proof first....

before.jpg

Above is a screen shot from a test I ran using a Green screen ( from EEFX.com )
I placed candles, shadows on the green screen put on an old East German guard jacket (because it has fine detail on it)and lit the green screen in a bad way....
I did this for one reason. To show you all that even a bad lit scene with fine detail can be cleaned.

No this method isn't just for chroma keying either. Its just for getting rid of noise and macro blocks. Ill add a few demos at the bottom of this post.

Ok lets have a look at a matte of the above image.

noise_copy.jpg

Good GOD I can hear you say! It looks like my footage. Yep mine too from time to time.

Now image is pretty noisy and is full of macro blocks. I could remove this by pulling the whites and and blacks up in a chroma key program however I'll lose a lot of detail. Like my hair for e.g. I want to keep as much fine detail as possible.

Ok lets look at the clean footage. Take a deep breath...

Ummmm you can close your mouth now.

Now what you are looking at is a key that has been pulled from the same image. No Macro blocks!!!
No Noise!!!

What you can see though is very fine detail where the noise was.
Look at the before and after matte, look at the hair, the candles flame. and the detailed candle holder?

Ok lets look at the keyed image.

So how was it done?

Its a program I stumbled upon called Neat Video and boy is it neat!

It can be used in the following programs as a plugin as this software is not stand alone.

After Effects
Premiere
Pinnacle Studio
VirtualDub
Sony Vegas

Now some noise removers simply blur the footage. This one doesn't. It removed the noise in my test footage and then resharpened the image.
There website is http://www.neatvideo.com/

Its easy to use and id say removes about 95% of the noise. Leaving you with clean and crisp footage.

Now I shot my tests using the HVX202en ( Australian version ) on P2 card.

I used Raylight so I could import the MXF files.

No I don't work for this company, nor do I make money from them but I am so impressed that I think there worth a mention.
The images speak for them selves.

Heres a bit more from stock footage I have.

Now the grabs below are from video also.

Below image is a dim lit room. You can just see the noise.
HD.jpg

Now you can see the noise in the Matte. If you look to the center of the grab you'll see a square pattern which is the clean video on neat videos basic settings. the outer of course is not treated.

The plugin is great for removing compression artifacts in compressed footage also. The foreground (me in my almost complete vader suite ) was a quick shoot from my Panasonic Fz20 still camera..

The background was a small picture that was compressed. You can see the noise and compression artifacts.

And look how much cleaner the walls look.

Anyhow hope you enjoyed my write up.

What does it do to moving footage? Give us an HD moving footage sample with no keys. Just some footage of someone walking if you could.

Edit: saw some footage on the site. It does a great job, but the Lizard Clip exhibits extreme loss in detail. The second shot of the lizard is so corrected that you can't see the scales on its side anymore. You can see them even through the super noisey footage.

However, that's also an EXTREME example of correction. Hmm.. Neat.

Nice.

I hope it allows you to adjust how much sharpening you want to reapply to the image. But, it's pretty damned clean and the resolution drop is nearly unnoticeable in practical de-noising.

I wonder how it would do in high-motion scenes, but still, thanks for reporting. Guess it won't hurt to spend 50.00 on it.

Nice - I'd never noticed 'Neat Video' before.
'Neat Image' (made by the same people) is used by the majority of photographers I know - my wife uses it all the time to reduce noise in her photos after post processing, and it really does a killer job. I'll be curious to see how this does on video...

....DAMN... no Mac version.
Didn't expect that - hopefully it's only a matter of time.
They make 'Neat Image' for the Mac.

I've actually considered batching stills through PS using neatimage...but the time involved would just be ridiculous. Hopefully they come up with something for us Mac users soon.

Just got this email from them...

We work on a Mac version and as soon as we have something for
Mac (I hope this will be in Q2 of 2008) I will let you know.
Until then, using one of the Windows versions is an available
alternative.

Best regards,
Vlad

Next weekend ill shoot some clean footage tests with good lighting and do a noise removal.

Best thing about the whole plugin is its $99 for the HD version which allows unlimited frame size.

Thats a bargain!

Anyhow ill keep you all posted on this thread with test footage.

Any ideas from anyone what you'd like to see with noise removed?

already spoke to them. they do have plans for FCP version. just didnt give any timeframe...

This really looks promising!
Looking forward to more footage from you, Freudenberg!

and of course: MAC VERSION!

I've got Windows as well and as SOON as I get my Letus back I'm trying this out with After Effects. The joys of having a Hybrid system.

All I gotta say is +REP for Freud. The Noise Reduction programs I've seen haven't come anywhere near this quality of noise reduction. They all have been exhibiting blurry images. I can see a HAIR'S worth of blur going on, but it's incredibly minimal.

Someone here said it: This shiz is v00d00. But, I'm on-board.

They shouldn't charge you for more than one License, though. I hope they let me switch my License from After Effects/Premiere to FCP once it's out.

I have used the demo (as I advise you all to try if your in Windows) and it is pretty amazing. Motion doesn't leave strange artifacts and the amount of PP sharpening
is under your control.

That's EXACTLY what I wanted to hear, Will. Thanks for reportin' back. I just asked about being able to switch licenses to FCP without paying for another. If it's a go then I'm gettin' the Pro Version right now.

Suhweeeet.

Afterthought 1: This + 1080p should be quite a nice deal.

Afterthought 2: I wonder if you can max out sharpening in camera then rip out the noise that it causes? What's that gonna leave you with?

Afterthought 3: Will it recognize Ground Glass Grain as Noise and remove it? And at what cost?

For interested users: it's a 15.00 Fee to switch licenses. Kinda don't think that's FAIR since FCP isn't out yet, but at least you don't have to buy a new License.

thanks Kholi

Ill shot a better test this weekend. The blur you are seeing in my test footage is more of an out of focus camera. I was shooting without a stand in. In fact I adjusted the focus point to the green screen.

Ill try and shot some mass movement footage. People walking different directions and grass footage to see how it take out the noise from a very busy shoot.

Anyhow I'm off to work. It's 6:30 am here in Australia and I have a train to catch. Glad people are very positive also by my post.
