The A - someone help my crisis with a good thought

Hello all. Haven't been on the forums for a long, long time.

Here's the thing. I bought my awesome, beautiful HVX200 back in Jan 07. I've had the cam for a year now and have taken maybe 5 minutes of footage.

The reason is that I fell quite seriously ill, and this lasted up until just a month ago. Knock on wood. After a lot of medical treatment, I'm now recovering nicely, and hope to get back to work soon.

Here's my crisis: We may be looking forward to the HVX200a at NAB (or something to that effect), and meanwhile I haven't even gotten a real period of time to enjoy the original.

Knock on wood, I am so grateful for how my health is now, it pales in comparison to the ever obsolete world of technology.

Needless to say, though there is an element of disappointment that I'm sure many of you could understand if you were in my shoes. I guess you could say that I'm looking for the advice of perspective.

If the price is higher (I got a great deal; NOT grey market) than what I paid, and it's a minor upgrade I won't be too upset. However, if it is a scenario where I may want to sell my cam to buy the upgrade... that would suck.

That said I also want this great device to keep on growing; and surely it will benefit everyone the more they add in the upgrade.

So, if anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'd appreciate it alot. I kindly ask that personal criticism is left at the door. I've been through a lot and if you don't like my post you don't have to respond. This is, for some reason, an emotional issue for me, so... that's it.

Thanks again. I think this community is awesome! My only regret is that I haven't been able to participate more.

Your whole argument is predicated on the presumption that there will be a new cam announced at NAB.

I personally don't think there will be.

Take a quick peek around the forums for the HVX200.

Your inquiry has been asked in several threads, most of which are recent.

Nothing has been announced, leaked or rumored.

NAB may bring some news; it may not.

Sorry, my fault, I should have been more clear. I did look around, and I understand that there's nothing concrete, and that there may be no announcement or possibly a new model instead of an upgrade.

my post was intended to ask IF there is an upgrade, if anyone had any personal thoughts about my situation.

This was not intended as a utilitarian post, but rather as a pointed request for advice and rationale from a community that seems to enjoy hashing these things out.

Thanks for the replies, though.

For whatever it's worth, I don't know what you are asking.

How can respond to whatever you interrogatory is if there is no news, and no rumors from Panasonic at all?

The HVX200 package price has dropped due to a series of Panasonic's promotions. Initially, no bundled p2 card was provided, then an 8 Gb bundled p2 card and now a bundled 16 GB p2 card.

But pricing as basically remained the same.

That's it.

Utilitarian or not what thoughts are you soliciting?

The general response is:

Technology moves fast. New things are always coming along. When you are ready to buy, buy the best that you can afford at the time and buy what will best suit your needs at the time and don't look back. Go start making money with it.

If you wait around for the next best thing all the time, you're going to be stuck back on your heels while everyone else is off pursuing their dreams, careers, or whatever.

Jason

I'd like to help, and I'm sorry for your illness and am glad you're feeling better . . .

But you didn't actually ask anything for advice on. You just said that if a better camera comes out for less money than what you paid for yours, it would suck.

OK. Understood why you would feel that way. But I don't see a question.

What are you looking for here?

The original HVX is a fantastic camera - IF a new one comes out in the spring I'll be keeping mine and continuing to shoot with it. If a new one doesnt come out in the spring I'll still be keeping mine and continuing to shoot with it. That's what I'd do in your shoes. Glad you're feeling better, now go shoot with the camera you already have and dont worry about the camera that might replace yours.

Thanks for all of your kind thoughts and advice.

I get the feeling you are all quite a bit more succinct, mature, and pointed in your attitudes towards the technology cycle. :)

I totally understand, after re-reading my posts where the problem is: You're right, I didn't really ask a question. I guess I was trying to solicit speculation, which is probably not very helpful. Like I said, it's more of an emotional post, than a practical one.

JdaJda: Thank you for your advice, specifically; that is exactly what I was looking for, in terms of a response.

And to both of the David's: I'm sorry if this was frustrating, and I appreciate that you took the time to reply. I think by pointing out the flaw(s) in my (non)question, I've learned essentially that it is insecurity at work here, not anything relevant to my work.

This in and of itself makes me feel much better. So again, I owe you all a thank you, because you provided enough feedback that I'm now able to see there really isn't a problem at all.

I apologize for a post that may not be helpful to any others (which is the goal of any good thread), but for what it's worth it's made me feel alot better about my situation, after a tough time.

Thanks again,

-alex

The HVX200 is an extremely usefull and professional camera, I mean just the fact that on P2 you have 4:2:2 color space is a super bonus (in my opinion).

I can't fault the camera, yeah better low-light performance could be better, maybe one or two small things, but overall it is a movie makers dream camera (again in my opinion).

the POINT being, even if there is a new camera annouced it will take almost a year to get to market. AND you don't always have to own the latest greatest version of a camera.

People with cheap consumer camera's sometimes make better movies than us with the expensive camera's.

Yeah, at some point having better technology can improve this or that, but the HVX200 is totally with the program, and you can go very far with it when you understand the camera, and shoot accordingly.
