Happy new year to me ... I got robbed ... :(

yeah, Jason, I'm slightly concerned about that as well. the dual sided dead-bolt was, of course, suggested to me after the fact by my cousin.

My neighbor thinks that it was the same kid/kids who broke into my sister's car (in my driveway), so i wouldn't be surprised if they came back. Had a meeting with a guy from CPI security and the cost of a security system is prohibitively expensive for me right now (350 setup, 40/mo monitoring ... for the BASE model system) I do have one of their signs tho, might just stick it in the yard.

Any other thoughts on fortifying my place?

Those alarms systems should'nt cost that much, you could go the DIY route, those security companyies are charging a bit excessively IMHO.

That sucks a$$.
Thats why we have one of these

I actually used an unmonitored alarm when we rented a house. I figured all the noise would scare folks away well enough. I paid under $300 for everything, including 2 keyfob remotes, three sets of door monitors, a motion sensor and the control base. It was pretty expandable. Ended up selling it on eBay after we moved into our current house with its pre-installed alarm. Our monitoring is only $25/mo, though.

Yeah, we've talked about getting a dog, but we have 1100 SQ townhome with no backyard, and having a large dog would be let's say ... invasive. Which I really think is the main reason we won't get one.

The CPI guy was trying to sell me on the "we're the biggest and the best" thing ... but I know exactly how these things work, I have to turn them off all the time as a realtor. You get in ... you get 45-60 seconds to turn off the alarm ... and then someone gets on the speaker ... if you don't know the emergency passcode ... then the alarm goes off, then they call you ... then if you say go, they call the cops ... and then it's BARE MINIMUM 2-3 minutes before a cop gets there. I mean ... these guys were in my house for no more than 2 minutes before my old lady neighbor scared them off ... what the hell would I pay 40 bucks for?

If breaking the law (and my window) wasn't a deterrent for these guys ... why would a beeping alarm be?

My GF brought up a point that it's stupid to have a security company as an intermediary anyway. Why don't we have standardized systems provided by the local police station. Hire a few more dispatchers to call you directly when your alarm goes off... BOOM cops are called right away, no need for a security company.

Well, we also have smoke alarms wired (wirelessed?) into the system, which is nice considering our dog has yet to learn to use the phone. Lazy pooch.

... you could set up a webcam and post the link here in the Café for us to all spy on you.

Call the the "DVXuser security force"

lol, mikko.

although probably not a bad idea ... just you know ... when we're not in the house. I can see it now, turn it on when i leave, post my cell number, call me if sh*t goes down. You guys would probably be faster than CPI anyway.

But Mikko, could you call 911 for me from Finland?

Alright, new question.

Talked to my insurance lady today (I carry a condo policy, like renter's insurance, because i live in a townhome and pay HOA for a master policy.) What do you think, grand total with damage and loss went up to about 600 bucks. My deductible is $250 bucks. Think it's worth it to file a claim?
