"The Burnt House" HVX/M2 feature

Congrats on everything you've done so far...I'm envious!

I've got to say that if you guys only knew how bad this film has been in the way of hurdles to overcome you would laugh about being envious lol. Try driving 2 hours with a child actor up to a remote rural location and having him say, "I just talked to my friend on the cell and my plans have changed for the week... my dad is coming to pick me up." Or the day after you call the lead actress and she says "I haven't talked to you in a week, sorry but things have gone really bad for me and I have to back out, sorry I couldn't call you sooner..." Add to this the fact that my pitch to potential actresses was: we're shooting a feature film up in the middle of nowhere, we have no money to pay you, it's mostly outdoors and long days, oh and the film is about a couple who looses their child to crib death... yeah... what's that? You're not interested? I wonder why... lol.

This film is a nightmare... It looks great, feels great, but every thing that could go wrong has. (Read post). We were two scenes away from wrapping when the HD crashed and read that there was no data when we restarted. We shut down the shoot and tried to recover the HD. Days later the HD was recovered by a friend, with corrupted QT files. Mind you not every file was corrupted and we did recover a large amount of data but not all. The actors all have prior engagements and can't reshoot for months... I'm broke... I might have to sell my camera to pay for pro recovery... I'm 100% about to jump off a building. In other news I sold my first film... And have spent our advance + in order to meet the deliverables... URGH!

there are places that will recover data off of hard drives. they're costly, but if they can pull data off of a hard drive they found at the bottom of the ocean, they can probably find something on your drive.

damn 241MB, i'm downloading but good thing about to go out to a restaurant and eat, lol. i'll comment once i get back tonight and look at it.

One new image up also, it's a still test from some green screen work we did for the film in 1080. The boy is nice and crispy ;)

Great looking stuff. I really like your posts so far because you are giving lots of tech info and that's what we filmmakers really want to find out!

Thanks and keep any bts or other technical info coming!

Thanks! This film has been the hardest film for me to make in general, with all that went wrong and all the care I've taken to really make sure every shot is right and that the sound is all good goes against every human impulse to try and rush through things. I've been praying that when I recover my HD (I still don't have the money) that all the footage is fine. I'll keep posting stuff, on this film alot of the good stuff has been the make up sfx. Later today I'm going to post some more gore ;)

Here is some further sfx make up stuff that we shot for the film. The girl had about 3 hours of make up + touch ups through out the shoot. We had to use blood eye drops because she wasn't able to get the sfx lenses in her eyes.

P.S. big props to www.9mmsfx.com for the lenses, they've been so great to deal with.

Loved the trailer! Now I want to see the film.

Thanks! I'm working on it, ever since I sold my first film I've been struggling to meet the deliverables on it and it's making my ability to fund and work in post on this film hard.

If any one is thinking of making a film here are a few things that you should do to help yourself if you ever want to sell it:

1. Have the audio seperated into Dialogue, Music, Effects, and full mixs.

2. Make an HD master and have it QC'd before sale.

3. Make sure that your getting the right sale price for your film and that all the work that is expected of you to meet any deliverables is within reason.

4. Have a good understanding of how long it will realisticly take you to meet any deadlines before they are laid down and agreed to and try and push them back to give yourself some breathing room.

Nice footage.

Thanks! I feel like this is the film that I can finally be totally proud of through and through. One other thing I forgot to mention earlier about make up FX is the fact that anyone who's ever done this kind of work knows how much you have to do for how little you get. Thinking back on those days we spent atleast half of our time in prep and then fought the sun going down and eventually had to move indoors into my basement to get the footage we needed for coverage. I've had a good friend of mine who's an actor tied to a tree in the middle of nowhere with little clothing on and no shoes in the dead of winter for hours on end three times now, and I think we're still going to need to shoot some inserts with him... I don't know if he likes making movies anymore :P

I like how you dropped the Master ped to - 7. I love that look. Most people shoot at 0 so they can drop it in post, but I can't stand how it looks at 0. I usually shoot everything between - 6 and even as low as - 9. As long as there's plenty of light it looks great.

I couldn't agree more, I feel that the HVX looks best with lowered ped and tons of light. The redrock doesn't hurt either.

Okay so I'm going to hang myself. Really, I am seriously in that mood. A PA just deleted critical files from my HD and I can't recover them.

How could this film get any worse?

I didn't notice the files missing until now, they are the bulk of the ending scene. I am F(@)#ED.
