Watch it at http://www.hkarlsen.no/rundtogrundt.mov
AND check out my other films and things at http://www.hkarlsen.no/

The story behind this shot is this.

The idea for the shot came from 2 sources. The amazing one takes of "Children of Men", and the not so well known film "Slacker", where you never really have a main character. We decided early on that we wanted a steadicam one-take, on location in Oslo. A insane concept, with limited resources and winter right around the corner. But amazingly, this is actually one of the first projects where I can say that we really accomplished what we wanted, not adapting to "reality" on bit. There is not one edit!

Budget:
We had around 30000 NOK, about 5300$ for the project. We knew that we had a huge technical and professional cost, and also a lot of extras, which dont need alot, but its impossible to get them on set if they are not getting anything. We got great deals from Videoutstyr.no, Blixt, Christian Kvartz Lighting and Twentyfourseven, treating students with smile instead of moronic attitude (cant name names, but for those who know the norwegian industry, and see what name is missing from the list, figure it out). Norwegian prices are high, among the highest in the world, so this is very little money..for those who wondered.

We knew our operator Atle Holtan from before, through his assistant Henrik Horgen, and they are great hardworking guys, trying to break it in the not-so-big norwegian industry. Check out their in-the-making site www.ahhh.no, for more info.

Technical
The shot was made on a steadicam, HVX200 with 2x16gb P2, mini35 adapter, wireless focus and monitor and a huge Master Prime 18MM lens. We originally wanted the superspeed, but the guys at Blixt double booked us, but managed to get us this great lens. Perhaps a bit overkill, but at least it looks good. We shot in 1080 25p, after reading some comments on 1080 being less compressed, regardless of the 1080i problem

Im attending a film&tv education in Norway called Westerdals. The 3. year is built like a company, where students recieve projects from real client for real money, accumulating money for examprojects in the second term. Check out our little page here www.westerdals.no/velfortalt but more importantly check MY page out at www.hkarlsen.no/eng I just updated the english section for you guys, so come make my webhost angry!

A big thanks to everyone involved, and especially my co-producer Lindsay Sanner and director Emilia Danilovic.

Thanks!

A+++++++!!!!!!

FANTASTIC!

Can you post the lyrics in English when you get a chance?

Very Cool Works Guys!

Thanks for Posting This!

So sick!! When I try anything like this I get my shadow all over the place. I think I saw yours for a split-second at the end, but it was wizardry most of the time. That choreography was amazing too. Good on ya.

Hi!
Theres alot of lyrics, and I dont have them digitally. And frankly, even I as a Norwegian have a hard time getting all the words together, they are really saying alot these guys. But ts really about how hard it is to break a bad cycle. The title means "Around and around" (thats why we ended up in the same place as we started, smart huh? :), not getting out of shitty life youre destined to have..

Thanks for great grade!

Hehe, yeah, theres a steadyshadow inside in the last seconds of the film... And, there are more mistakes. Who can find them? About shadows, it really was not so hard. Outside it was all natural light ofcourse. Inside we used alot of barracudas, or autopoles from manfrotto. Great plastic bars you can clamp between walls. Its a great tool, and I will use it from now on on every on location lighting job. You get so much more space and freedom to move around. Only works for smaller lighting equipment those we had. We had alot of 200w and some 800w, plus some reflectors here and there. And blue filters to fake HMI lighting...could not change the white balance OR the fstop :)

That was brilliant! I couldn't stop watching because something was always happening to hold my attention. Good song too. Well done!

really really really amazing!

i am a huge fan of children of men and those amazing long takes!

i thought your take was amazing and it flowed really nice... great steady cam work!

so you said it had wireless focus? how does that work, does the focus puller sit somewhere and watch on a monitor and focus it?

A+ work

Thanks for great feedback. First, I must stress that im not the steadicam operator. I have tried a rig, but I am nowhere near doing this kind of work. As stated, my guy was Atle Holtan, a really talented guy on the way up. My guess is that if anyone is interested in using him, he can travel all over the world to please a steadicam-need :)

I made parts of the concept and made alot of the coreography (floorplan) together with my co-producer og director. In addition I had technical supervision and was 1. assistant director onset.

Wireless focus works pretty easy. Theres a wheel connected to some 15mm front bars coming out of the mini35. This connects to the 18mm lens focuswheel. The focus puller did not sit somewhere, she had to constantly run behind the camera, judging by eye the distance to the object. It was a real challenging job, and with a tighter lens, it might have been impossible. We actually are 6 persons behind the camera at any given time, a reaaaaal puzzle to figure out. Steadi, assistant, me, director, playback, focuspuller.

Fantastic

Fantastic

This is very well done. I love the direction and filming and post production on this. Really good. And for the budget too! Wow. :)

Reminds me of that Russian movie with only one take (Russian Ark). Maybe this is not on the same scale, but it's done in the same way. Really good work.

Nice steadicam work, choreography, and directing. And the focus puller deserves kudos. Well done putting it all together.

I thought this video was really cool and different. I didn't understand the language, but good music is good music. Excellent work.
