Tips needed for shooting 720pn Doco

Hi.. I've had my HVX202EN for 18mths now... have always shot 1080i or DVCPro50/DVCPro... I've archived about 500 8 gig cards so far..

I'm commissioned to shot a news stringer pieces on a 7 day surf boat marathon ...

I'm also thinking I'll do a mini doco on the female teams competing...

As I'll be solo on this gig I want to try and get the max time out of the cards.. hence the 720pn option.. ( I have 3 x 8gig cards)..

The issue I've always had with 720pn is the aliasing when converting to SD DVD.. How do you guys get around this issue and any tips for shooting would be greatly appreciated...

Cheers

What method/NLE are you using? I havent ever come across this and shoot ALOT of 720pN for the same reasons. My current method to go to DVD is:

edit in Premiere
output AVI at native resolution
import into tsunami tmpeg express 4.0( i use this for all my file making - wmv, dvd whatever)
export dvd mpeg from tsunami
import into encore and burn away!

letting tsunami do the transcoding and resizing gives me the sharpest results. Letting premiere and encore do them yields slightly softer results mainly noticible in small text. Hope maybe this gives you some help.

Thanks.. I'll be using FCP 6.0.2... so be on the Mac platform..

Do you find any strobing on quick pans... would shooting on a higher shutter reduce strobing...

Cheers

Yeah I won't touch Premiere output for most stuff anymore, everything always comes out a little fuzzier.
I work in PC but I like Sony's Vegas and DVD Architect for my quick DVD outs, or handling the resize in AfterEffects gives me perfect results every time.

The strobing could be due to using that card conserving but filmic looking
speed (24 or 25P). Using 30P will help eliminate the problem, but you will
of course lose card capacity. Higher shutter speed will help in either mode.

Thanks.. the 25p is what I've always had an issue with.. did a TVC earlier this year and the wide shot of the Kitchen with all the vertical and horizontal lines was aliasing to the max...

How do you set up the field order in mpeg compression for progressive material..

I'll do some test'e this week.. shoot starts on the 30th..

Was thinking to drop the 720p timeline into a 8 or 10 bit upper field first 720x576 and then encoding...

Cheers

I've also noticed some fuzziness on Premiere CS3 Mac over FCP2 when editing native MXF in Premiere.

Kinda of wonder why

should be no field ordet at all if its progressive
Are you sure? I thought the destination format should be the one that's most compatible with the media, Lower Field First, since it's just a container format. If you were outputting for the web, you'd use progressive.

Thanks.. so I'll have to provide to the stations a 5min news story each day...

Will be uploading via FTP to a central server..

The station wants :

COMPRESSION SETTINGS

Les, you need to send us something like this

Video and audio file encoded as -

MPEG 2 program stream
Video bitrate 8 Megabits per second, 4:2:0 chroma, variable bitrate, 25 FPS
720x576 interlaced, 16:9 aspect ratio
Audio bitrate 64 or 128 Kilobits per second (your choice)
Long GOP (IBBPBBPBBI or similiar)

If you are shooting DV then it should be encoded Bottom Field first. but we need to test this as we have had a lot of problems with material having reversed field order.

my destination format is 24p so there are no fields. at least thats what I think is the case - I wont claim to be an expert in this arena by any means. I'm pretty sure I'm making 24p mpegs though and nothing goes in a interlaced container. Am fine with being wrong though if anyone knows better :)

eta - ahh instructions, there you go! so does that fix your problem then lez?

I thought most commercial DVDs from film were written with Mpegs encoded to 30i with advanced pulldown, and the "progressive" playback feature available on some DVD players was an output option, not an input option. Hopefully a heavy-hitter can come in and clear this one up... I'm going to dig through some wikis and see what I find.

Looks like the DVD player handles pulldown (3:2) when you feed it 23.976fps progressive files, and you can feed it 29.97 files progressive or interlaced (wikipedia).

I know you can do exactly what you are talking about with the pulldown in 60i but I *think* that you can author a "native" 24p dvd as well and I *think* thats what I do... all my settings are on my work computer...

I think I was not clear enough... I'm shooting in PAL so 25pn is 25fps progressive 1280x 720 pixels..

I need to supply 720 x 576 wide screen format mpeg with fields set to upper.. same as when I'm encoding for a DVD.. the only difference I see is that they want a transport stream (video/audio embedded) as to a program stream (audio/video as separate files).. which is what I would normally have for a DVD...

Cheers

PS.. DVD's are 25fps upper field in PAL..

cool so I think I am doing that then, but now I see what you are talking about when specifying the field order if going the 60i route though. Did wikipedia mention any advantage one way or the other?
