Flash h.264 and AAC playback today

Adobe's Flash is going to support playing back h.264 video files with AAC audio! You can read a blog post by one of the developers on exactly what will be supported.

A beta of the flash plugin that is capable of doing this out of the box will be available later today at Adobe Labs. Once you have the beta plugin, you should be able to load .mp4,.m4v,.m4a,.mov and .3gp files using the same NetStream API that is normally used for .flv files!!!

That's pretty cool. You can now finally put some quality videos on your personal website cheap. Will this still be free?

It will be free if you use a premade flash video player like the JW Media Player. You just have to point the playlist to a .mov file or .mp4 The only thing that needs to happen is that the visitor will need that version of the flash plugin. So, we just have to wait until that comes out.

Sweetness! I read about this but I didn't know it would be that easy. Just upgrade to the new flash player and point to a video file. I bet microsoft isn't to happy about this latest flash addition. Quicktime is about to take off.

I ran my own h.264 file in a player I'm putting together. It runs without a hitch. The only bugs I saw were gradient mapping on moving vectors for my interface. That should be fixed/work on machine faster than my laptop. I wrote a little more about on on another thread somewhere on this forum.

Don´t have m< flash suite here. Does this mean I can point flash at any h.264 file and it will be played? I dnon´t need to make flv´s anymore?

Flash plays QT, sort of...

Flash plays QT, sort of...

Hello Guys and Gals,

I just wanted to say that there are actually some pretty sinister implications about how Adobe has rolled out the h.264 spec with some implications that go against the requirments of the spec, such as freely distributable...no Open Source Streaming. I think this might actually be illegal...but read the release carefully if your really into the idea of presenting QT via the Flash Player and make you own opinion.

If you agree with me and others that this is a poor business model, flex your consumer might and SPEAK OUT!

We've been testing this out on my site for awhile to give people the option of viewing the flv or original upload (if logfiles said it was h.264), now whats the stipulation on which players you can use? The first flowplayer seemed fine, however flowplayer2 it gets all sorts of messed up.

Just tested it out with a few clips...do notice a few things...

1. Audio can be out of synch
2. Distortion - I'm noticing some form of scan line/frame to frame distortion - ie you'll see, horizontally that its, portions of other frames before/after it advances...one shot of mine was really bad.
3. Slightly reduced speed via loading/scrubbing.

steve mod from sp?

Yeah I'm the guy that runs it.... We've been testing native h.264 playback since "Moviestar" got announced. So far it's been hit or miss, it seems to not want to play back certain types of audio... AAC seems to play nice but not IMA. We were originally really excited about this development when we saw how selective it was.

I'm logging every clip uploaded to perception and if 'h.264' gets parsed in the ffmpeg conversion logfile then it sets a trigger to pull a page to view the original movie within a flash window (you can't see that though, only me)... and i'd say it's around a 65-70% success rate with what the moviestar update decides it wants to play.

Encore CS3 will also export an authored DVD to a Flash web site with menus.

Really kinda of nice, but encoding takes forever.

Hopefully this gets figured out soon. FLV compression sucks! What's up steve, keep me informed on the SP h264/flv video stuff.

Yeah, until there's a solid solution for encoding uploaded footage to H.264 (unless it was it's native source) then we have to keep pushing FLV conversions for compatability to all. However we're going to start weeding out the h.264 clips that play fine (so far seems to be h.264/aac) and start displaying those for default viewing and slaughting the FLV bitrate to encourage people to upload with the standards so it can be viewed in it's native form.

We have to huck out $1500 for a flash developer to make a custom flash player, and quite frankly the next purchase I'm making sure as hell isn't software. We started using Flowplayer 2 and it's making the h.264 footage look stupid.

Here's an example.

H.264/AAC/.MOV (sorry for the wide stretch, I was in a hurry and didn't tweak.

First movie played with Flowplayer 1 (you're watching the native clip too)

Now the same movie with Flowplayer 2 (see how it ghosts the channels? weird huh?)
