Wow, more than three years later, and I'm still at it. Don't know if anyone remembers me, but I've been with DVXuser from its infant years. Hi!!!
I just finished my two year masters program at NYU studying visual effects and computer animation. For my thesis, I spent one year to create a short action film where ninjas battle a transformers robot. It was highly technical, using Maya, Boujou, after effects.
The explosion was done using Maya's fluid FX. The robot was modeled, rigged, animated in Maya. Lit using HDRI. render using mental Ray.
Live action footage shot with the DVX100a. Here are some grabs.
an HDRI image taken on location lit the robot nicely. I still had to design a lighting setup in Maya to create the shadows and create the specular highlights however.
Fluid FX explosion done in Maya's fluids. The simulation took me 6 months or off and on R&D to figure out...and lots of tweaking
Tracking done in boujou and rotoscoping done in After Effects.
