New Batch of IKANs

Is this a real HD monitor?
Have you tested it out yet?
I shot with an IKAN this summer as it was ****...
but I would be interested on seeing how this new model
is working.

As my language on about the monitor I used was not professional it was the right description of my experience with the IKan monitor.
I could not use it for focus at all because the picture and resolution was terrible. The only think that it was usefully for was the in monitor flip of the image so I could use it as a guide that way but it also kept cutting out with its power all the time. I would have to turn it off and then turn it back on for the monitor to start working again.
I was using it with a M2 mini 35mm and got both from a rental house. Not sure what model type it was but it was definitely not HD.
I would be interested in here how this new one is working.

brian - you are WAY behind the curve on this subject. the ikan monitor mentioned IS indeed HD quality. and it has been discussed in GREAT DETAIL (with sample pics) in various threads here over the last 8 months or so.

the one you had was indeed pretty crappy for anything other than framing a shot. i had one and sold it when this v8000hd came out.

for the money, the v8000hd is great for framing and focus of HD content. is it as good as competing products that cost 50%, 100% or even 200% more? nope. but for the money - it comes damned close ; )

"HD quality" huh?
That`s about the same as those "HD Ready" stickers on TFT TVs.

TheIKAN V8000HD Monitor has a resokution of 800x480.

actually, its not about the same as that.

the panasonic, totevision and marshall (other 3 major players in the small "HD" field monitor game) all have that same res - what's your point?

We just got in a bunch of the new IKAN V8000's and they seem improved over the previous generation.

Here is a pic

I just wish there were a DVI output. I'd like to get a unit like this for on camera and CC work. If I ran S-Video out of FCP to this, could I calibrate and trust it??

The Ikan doesn't have a flip feature either.. and the picture is good as what I've seen on the marshall.. The only thing suspect is the build quality as it's all plastic.... and my buddy had a problem with two of them last year... But as for the Marshall that things such a beast it's not really an on camera monitor. I used it on my C-stand with mount more than anything...

If these new ikans are more reliable, you can sign me up right now. Besides the flicker, I actually preferred the Ikan I used to the marshall's i've used on sets

What flicker are you referring to?
I've never used the Ikan - but I have to say it's kind of a tempting price.
If our LoveFest film taught me anything it's that I really need a decent on camera monitor for focus....

... or I need to hire a DP so I can quit worrying about it.
:)

I used mine yesterday for an interview and I am happy with it. It is plastic, so be easy on it, but I prefer the lighter weight. Colors are a little off and it blooms a little with the hotspots, which has been discussed as not being it's strengths, but you can tweak them close and it works well for focus. I purchased the HD kit with a dead pixel and the price was nice (discount on what they call "b-stock).

No flicker yesterday, but have had it once (used three times so far). Not sure if it is going to be an issue.
