NEW 1024x768 HD Monitor

Ned,
It was a pleasure finally meeting you. :)
I will shoot you some photos and a comparison chart today.

mlove,
there are many factors of why you would see discrepancies. It could be your tv is not calibrated, or it could be you dvd player is altering the color, it could also be the input to your tv from your dvd player. there are so many factors that it is difficult to narrow it down.

If you have a MBP and it has a way to have my monitor as a secondary display, then it might work for you. (as far as dialing in the color to match another display, I'm sure you can come darn close. its just beautiful colors and a great image) But if you want to use it as the main display, I would advise against it. Although it takes 1900x1200 input, it is still down-rezing it to 1024x768 and that makes the text super small. Wish you were in LA, and you come come try it out and see if it meets your needs. :(

UsLatin,
What you are backing out now?

Definitely wouldn't think of using as a primary display. I'm talking about feeding just the video signal out to it for monitoring purposes. Accurately monitoring my footage in post is my biggest challenge right now and I'm at a bit of a loss on how to tackle it.

So... just plug it into the DVI port, and calibrate how? Using bars from FCP and the blue only on the monitor? If so, this would be a great device for me.

What about scaling, it won't be pixel for pixel, but that's probably not nearly as important for me as the accuracy of the color.

I am trying not to but not sure if I will be able to leave the house that day. I might have to do some work at home.

mlove,

Yes, that would be it. You would send out bars from FCP and the calibrate the monitor. First the Brightness and Contrast and then the Hue and Saturation with the Blue Only button turned on. (then you can go back and check the brightness and contrast and so on)

I've gotten the calibration dead on with this setup. :)

Like for_mlove, I am also thinking about getting it and using it for post for CC... I am a bit worried though being that it is an LCD, so small... so on and so forth... plus the extra cash cause I was hoping to score a 13' for $500 so for me it is a big price difference.

You know what I would LOVE to do... I'd love to see it side by side with a PVM 1351Q or a similar CRT... not only to compare the color but to get a feel of how it would be to CC in a little one. Benefits would be that I'd have it real close since you can put it anywhere... the resolution would be higher since the 16' had 450 lines and others don't go much higher... though I don't know if there is some sort of difference between vertical resolution and "TV lines"... I have nothing but questions...

The PROS:
hehehe... do I even have to list them? :)

Anyone else want to throw their two cents in on using this monitor for CC?

The reason I'm liking it so much is that I have to be able to take any gear I want to have available for the next year on a plane in early January. Can't exactly fit a 23" Cinema Display in my suitcase... but this guy... Plus I get the bonus of having an on camera monitor, and... well like Mr. USLatinContent mentioned, do I even have to list the pros??

Just an update,

I've gotten the new firmware for my monitor and I'm upgrading the units just before they ship. So these are the Major Updates that you will notice:

1. ZOOM - and I mean zoom. when I feed it hdmi from my computer it can make something 2 times (200% regular size) the zoom setting at 50. and 54 times (5400%) when zoom setting at 100. which is way more zoomed in than 1:1 pixel for pixel. at zoom 19 it would be 1:1 at 720p, and at zoom 48 it would be about 1:1 in 1080p.

2. FREEZE - not sure if you would need this, but now you can freeze the frame. :)

3. Hard Switch ON/OFF - I'm installing a Hard ON / OFF switch so it doesn't drain the battery when its off. With the new custom buttons the monitor has to always be turned one. and now you have the possibility to put it on sleep mode with the custom button, or turn it entirely off with the Switch. (I believe the Marshall has something like this)

GREAT development!

1. Definitely let us know what zoom settings give you exact 1:1 at 1080p if there is one or which would be the best zoom setting to monitor for focus when you get a chance.

USLatin,
Like I said in my previous post (which probably didn't make sense to some)
zoom setting #19 would be about 1:1 in 720p
zoom setting #48 would be about 1:1 in 1080p
But heck, you can go to zoom #90 and if you can't get critical focus then then you are a chump. :)

Hey Dan,
Well, the Zoom seems to work on both HDMI and S-Video. my camera is at the shop for the Firewire connector. (I didn't have my FirewireSaver that day and sure enough it broke. :( )
So I'm guessing it will work for all inputs. but I'd like to check it first.
Also. if you have the image rotated then the zoom only works good until Zoom level 38 after that it gets whacky. I'm sure the next fixes in firmware will fix that, but who know when that would be. :(

Hi MagicCat,

Thank you for you interest, and I hope you can bump up your budget :)
  1. As for the inputs on the bottom: I don't think I can change my design for one or two units, but what I can tell you is that you can mount the monitor upside down. It has a rotate image function, so it works either way and I've provided mounting holes at the bottom and top. (this should solve your concerns.)
  2. As for a shock mount case, I'm already developing it and will offer it soon. Funny enough is very similar to what you are describing minus the Plexiglass cover. (I might use that idea as the lid if you don't mind)
  3. multi volt power Tap to sponge off ? what do you mean by this. can you send me a link to what one looks like?
Thanks,

Luis

Go for the cover. If it saves a few poked screens and RMA requests, Im Totally game.

Multi Volt Power tap: I dont have any pics, but essentially Im talking about a selectable 6, 7.2 and 12 volt power tap so a user could hook up a wireless mic unit, maybe a light and use the 7.2 to feed the Camera or something. All items could be powered thorugh the monitor, and that is fed DC power through one central 12 volt source. IE: I swiped an AB Gold Brick mount off an old betacam dockable deck and mounted that, to a Home Made Shoulder mount for my camera. I soldered in some extra wires and DC power ports to power other stuff like a monitor. However, if my stuff needs less than 12 volts, like the camera or a 6 volt LED array or something, I must use specific batteries (defeating the purpose) or a an addtional off the shelf Radio Shack 12 volt voltage switch box to drop the voltage to what is needed. By the time Im done, it is a whole GOB of unsightly cables. I lose respect quickly from those looking at the mess.
:violin:

Good luck with all this. Your passion is in the spirit of the old Ham Radio ops. Its not what is out there, it is creating something better to fill the need. Necessity is the mother of invention!.

Im still hoping to get one.

Ok,
Just returned from delivering a demo to one of my customers for the weekend. He is shooting on the Canon XLH1 and the out put through the HD-SDI is awesome. that camera also has a zoom button that sends the zoom through the HD-SDI so its super easy to focus.

From there I went to the Final Cut User Group Meeting in Hollywood. and Redrock had my monitor on their setup. So I did get to test the zoom and it worked great. (again, when flipped, its harder for the zoom to work properly after 38, but other than that it was great.)

MagicCat,
I'll work on the Plexi screen (or some sort of anti-reflective screen if I can find something cheap)
As for the multi volt Power tap, I won't be able to incorporate that into the unit. Just too much space. I would have to re-design my whole unit, and not enough people would require it.
As it is, with my swappable battery mounts, you can use whatever battery your shoot is using. :)
