Can I use a laptop as camera monitor?

How do I connect a laptop to the camera as monitor?
Does it make sense, has anybody done it?

Could you still view the cameras picture, while offloading P2?

What are the minimum specs?

You connect the camera via the firewire ports on your cameral and laptop. This does not work while the HVX is in 24pn mode, since the HVX does not send a signal out the FW port in that mode.

I don't understand your second question, and I believe that answer to your final questions depends on what software you are using to view the image. The minimum specs for that software will be the minimum specs for viewing the camera's image on your laptop. With FCP, a 1.5 G4 PowerBook works fine.

What software can be used to view the picture on a Windows XP laptop?

Can you offload P2 cards at the same time, while seeing the picture on the laptops screens/running the program to view the HVX picture?

DV Rack 2.0 HD (aka Adobe OnLocation) works brilliantly for this. There are also Mac-based alternatives such as HD Monitor Pro and ScopeBox.

Could you still view the cameras picture, while offloading P2?
No, because P2 is handled as a file transfer, not a live video capture. You don't waste a lot of time doing a live realtime capture, you just plug the card in and copy files over. It's not "video data", it's computer data.

If you wanted to go low-tech and do a live capture, then yes DV Rack would let you monitor the footage while you "captured" it.

What are the minimum specs?
It's different for every software program so you'll have to check with the publishers.

Thanx

What I mean is: recording a P2 in HVX. Then taking full P2 out of HVX, inserting to PCMCIA slot of laptop and offloading while still watching the DV Rack picture on laptop.

Possible?

Yes.

What you cannot do is record to the P2 card in PN mode and watch the video on the laptop at the same time, because in PN mode the Firewire port doesn't send any data.

You can do both...however, It takes longer to dump and the monitor image sometimes has trouble keeping up. That is why I'm now using the laptop for monitoring only and dumping to my MBP through a Dual Adapter.

Maybe my laptop is just getting old. OnLocation has some fairly high system requirements.

I regularly use my XP laptop as a monitor along with OnLocation. Although there is some latency between the camera and the laptop, it works surprisingly well in most cases.

In addition to monitoring, OL also contains a lot of other goodies such as vector scope, Waveform monitor, shot clock, and a bunch more.

But you can record with a laptop. Right?

Does this only work with DV Rack HD/Onloaction?
What are the tested minimum laptop specs?

Yes you can.

Adobe has the minimum specs for On Location.

And a recent post dealt with it. Search and go to adobe.com
