Panasonic USA, HVX answers the EX1 push with a free 16GB P2 card

To me this is the best news ever, I'm purchasing a HVX with the money uncle sam is nice enough to return. However I've been lightly keeping my eye on this EX1, but this $900 savings without question sealed the deal, so it appears the marketing strategy worked.

the ex1 looks like the king of the pro-sumer cam's to me
solid state at a more realistic price than the p2 could well give sony the lead

the hvx was same price, if not more, on initial release, and we all know how ridiculously overpriced p2 cards were.......

Yup. And the EX1 wasn't even available. Now it is, later at the same cost. Or rather, now, but at a higher cost. .. either way you look at it, the HVX is a cheaper camera.

And SxS cards, just like today's P2 prices, will seem outrageously overpriced 2 years from now. But they represent the very latest technology, and if you want that, you have to pay for it.

But if price is your deciding factor, then the camera doesn't matter.

not saying cards are currently cheaper, but sony have started out well one this one,if they, and other manufacturers are to produce more reasonably priced cards than p2 they'll get the lead,
i ain't bashing the hvx200,i'm an owner myself, but p2 prices were pure silly to start with, possibly putting people off a purchase, whereas the sxs cards are selling for a more sensible initial price

That's only because if Sony does not conform to a de facto price tag that has been established by Panny, no one will buy it. Panasonic brought the world P2. It was one of the first formats that allowed prosumers/professionals to record high bitrate video onto flash memory.

Sony doesn't have a business if it doesn't sell the cards at the same price Panny is selling it at. And because there was the same kind of technology before SxS, which has nearly the same function of recording as P2, there is no need to price it at a steeper price than what Panny sells it at. It's just not marketably reasonable.

But I have a question about Panasonic's deal with a free 16 GB card....

Will this deal stay continuous until their next marketing strategy? Or will it have like a time limit that was given for certain deals.

In other words, will Panasonic have the deal like this from XX/XX/2007 to XX/XX/2008? Or will it be a permanent deal?

I don't know if I should be bummed or not. I just bought my HVX and four 16gb cards YESTERDAY - before the current promotion ended. (Also before I learned of this new deal!) Well, at least I will definately be learning a bunch from the book!

Forgive me for not knowing what in the world you're talking about, but... what are you talking about? You're somehow trying to imply that a 16GB card from Sony is "reasonably priced" and a 16GB card from Panasonic is/was "overpriced" even though -- they're the exact same price?

And somehow that a camera that is 20% to 30% less expensive is ... what, more expensive? Sorry if I don't get it, but -- I don't get it.

the hvx was same price, if not more, on initial release
What is this supposed to mean? The HVX was, what, the same price as the EX1? Of course it wasn't, the EX1 is substantially more expensive. The HVX's initial MSRP was $5,995, the EX1's initial MSRP is $7,790. Are you trying to say that the HVX was more expensive at its launch than the EX1 is? If so, you're extremely wrong.

As for today's street prices:
HVX: $5200 with 16GB. Additional cards are $900 each.
EX1: $6700 with 8GB, and an additional 8GB by mail-in rebate. Additional 16GB cards are $900 each.
(prices quoted are B&H, same dealer for both)

As for rock-bottom deals, I think the EX1's been found for about $6460 or so, and the HVX has been bought for $4995. No matter how you slice it, the EX1 is about 30% more expensive. It does more, it costs more. The world is in balance.

Well, I think he is referring to the initial pricetag the P2 cards were, in which he is comparing how reasonable the initial prices of the SxS cards are compared to the initial prices of P2.

But I completely agree with you one hundred percent.

did'nt realize heads would take it so personally!
my meaning was as concept puts it.
when i checked pricing in the uk bout a year ago,the hvx200 WAS (in £)the same price on release as the ex1, which is why i bought a gray,
the p2 cards are only now becoming more sensibly priced, they were very expensive up until a few months back,
hope i didnt upset you all too much.

It looks like I'll return my HVX and then buy it again to get the 16 gig card. Even though I'm 7th on the list at my vendor for the EX1, from what I've seen, there's nothing about it that would cause me to just give up my HVX altogether. Hopefully I'll be able to do some real comparisons next week.

Well, sure. Sony had the benefit of seeing how the market played out before it made its move.

..Plus we are 2 years further with technological development .. of course all memory prices are more "reasonable" now.

Same could be said for any media. I remember when blank DVD's were $10, not $0.10. - Or CD-R's where $20 ... And MiniDV tapes were $12, and floppy disks were $5. And when Dial-up internet was $25/month. And a brick sized cellphone that coudlnt' evne send text messages was $1000.

Technology improves, prices come down, the manufacturer has nothing to do with it. So Panasonic decided to make it's solid-state camera a little sooner, good for them. Many people have been happily using and making money with it for ages. Teh fact that Sony chose to come into the game later is their decision, and irrelevant to the price of memory.
